    Barrel Lengths

    Hey all another Q,
I notice numerous opinions on what barrel length has on range and accuracy. Alot of ppl say the longer the more accurate and flatter trajectory.

What I dont understand is the fact that they claim this on their 2 piece barrels. On these barrel systems, the control bore (stainless) section does not increase in length, only tip size does. Tips do not acelerate the ball, only guide the ball and muffle sound.

At PB shop here in hAwaii, all the shops feed the damn same line "...longer the barrel, the more accurate and range you will get..." OMG, but on my field, I have seen 10" boomsticks fire the same range and accuracy as the 16" ones.

If length doesnt matter, i just have a few questions, what is the ideal length? 10, 12, 14? Also, why do most of the professionals use 14" barrels, I dont see thay many 10" or 12" out there? Image? Looks?

Let me know all. Im confused.

I believe the optimal barrel legnth is 10-14".... 12 is great :)

Many people will tell you to go with the "Super-Duper-Reach-Out-and-touch-them-from-across-the-field" 18 inch barrels. Some compnay actually made a 20" barrel too, however, after about 14" extra legnth makes pretty much no difference.

Technically barrel length is pretty irrelevant as long as u have a 8" control bore or something.

Pyschologically people can put a lot of store in longer barrels, why? People feel more comfortable with certain lengths i suppose. I find longer barrels do improve my aim at range this is a human factor and not a technical fact.

ultimately one person may be more accurate with a longer barrel but that is not due to the change in range but the change in the persons aim.

yeah i use my 8inch mini mag barrel which is a little harder to keep steady as compared to my JJ(lot longer) is easier to control

The reason you see lots of back players shooting 16" barrels, and all, cause they can just have the tip of the barrel rested inside the grooves of corrigated pipes in hyperball fields, but all so 14 in. barrels is around the most used, 14 & 12 inches.

i think nothing more than a 14" anything bigger is just way to long and so hard to maneuver with

The longer barrels to me seem more accurate because you can sight down the barrel, but I know my 10"JT is just as accurate as my 16" aa.

i use a 14" barrel because i can sight down it, which gives me better accuracy. some people aim other ways and can use shorter barrels.

I bought it at the pro shop at CPX (major rip off); about $45 cheaper on the internet. I love the 10" JT on my angel. With a K2 drop, my setup is very tight. Don't know if you ever played the town at CPX, but shoots fairly accurate across the field. JT is supposed to be coming out with a kit in about a month or so, but probably will be expensive since they sell new backs for $90; the same cost as a whole new JT barrel online.

I like 14" barrels... well, with the exception of my freak wich is 15.5" due to the extra inch and a half they have

Heres some interesting results with 2 autococker barrels I used on my micromag:

My standard barrel is a 14" Full Tilt J&J 2 piece barrel. I made sure the paint barrel match was perfect. I set it at 290 fps with my chrono. It was pretty accurate, what triped me out was when I unsrcewed the tip off. It was now a 6" stainless barrel (so to speak). The fps jump up an additional 15. The barrel was pretty damn loud, but the accuracy on average was pretty much the same at 50-60 ft. With maybe 1 out of every 8 balls shooting way left field or way right field. Not bad.

What tripped me out was when I swapped over to my brothers 11.5 lapco Barrel Autospirit... The supposively a VERY accurate and VERY efficient barrel. It had a nearly 20 fps drop on my mag. Way wierd. Accuracy was the same as the J&J 2 piece, just lower efficiency.

                            Conclusion:
14" J&J 2piece 290-295 fps nice accuracy nice sound control

J&J 2piece (no tip)305-310 fps nice accuaracy with a few straying way off course DAMN LOUD

Lapco 275-285 fps nice accuracy, not as quiet as 2 pieces

So much for my amateur review, but it interests me how much accuracy a shorter barrel can get in competition with a longer one. ALso, how much more efficiency a shorter barrel can get in comparison vs a longer one also.

Hyper...you just answered a hard question to understand.....FRICTION.

                              the JJ 2-piece was 290...

remove the porting and excess length...310...

change the barrel, keeping the same paint and pressure...280...

its all about friction...a longer barrel will make life easier to sight down the barrel...but it adds friction, which means you have to add more pressure to hit a desired fps. Therefore, that is why people complain about that 16" boomie using more gas, also that is y back players complain that their markers are gas hogs, when the same player, using a 10-12" ideal barrel is loving the efficiency.
