I'm guessing this is a fairly trivial question, but is there any specific reason why white lithium grease is specifically mentioned? Could any other medium-lightweight silicon grease (like paintball dow33) be used instead?

Because its high temperature and less likely to blow up and kill you under pressure. You have been warned.
