    Anodizing Dilema

Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions on a few ideas I have. Ive been going back and forth on like 5-6 different ideas and quite honestly Im getting a headache over it, as I think this is a pretty big decision on a gun.

My initial thought was a pretty loud ano job, lime green and blue splash. This is still in my top 3 I'd like to do.

Then I saw the "space mag" that was just posted, awesome. I have always been a fan of pewter/black chrome. So then a new idea spawned and this is the main one ive been debating on. So here is my ideas on this.

To not completely steal the look of the other gun, by using grey and pewter. I was thinking of using only pewter, then using gloss finish and dust finish to accent the gun. My problem is figuring out which parts to dust and which to keep gloss? Ive already contacted LMG and Ano-Tech, if I only use the 1 color and the dust to break up the gun it pretty much cuts the cost in half, $130 for both places on a one color job. I have the resources and tools to send the gun in 100% prepped for either finish, so thats where about $80 gets taken off the job. Because I got quoted around $200-$220 if they blasted the parts and prepped them.

What do you guys think would look good? And do you think the use of gloss and dust with the same color would "break up" the look enough?

this is what I was thinking...

    Gloss:
Body, feedneck body, Freak front, On/off asa, RT Pro valve back, Blade trigger (maybes are, LPR, Mini rail)

    Dust:
Intelliframe, CP detent, collar and clamp parts on feedneck, Emag rail, Emag sight rail (if I can find one), Vert asa, Foregrip, (maybes are, LPR, Mini rail)

I just cant picture it, I cant tell if the gun will look like a one color blob, or if the accents will have a good effect on the gun? any thoughts?

I like the idea. I have seen this combination on some new cars/trucks with glossy paint and flat sport stripes and it looks cool.

My gun is a gloss/dust black scheme which I love. I think it's better than just having 2 colors. It's hard to see how cool it is just using photos though.

But, what if you did the dust/gloss scheme using one of the loud colors you wanted? The dust would be way toned down and would almost look like a different color. Would probably work best using a greyish blue.

I like the idea of doing it to say the green, but my brothers lime green dp4 in my opinion looks weird? I don't know what it is about dust green, it looks a little pukey to me... ?

I think I'm going to pull my gun apart and strip the rest of my black stuff tonight, possibly be able to make it over to my buddy's shop and blast some parts... I should get a pretty good idea of putting it together with some pieces dull.

So my last bid I got was Caustic, he came in at $175 with 100% prep done by myself. Seems steep, but I know from previous builds on here his work is top notch. Plus, he gets what I'm trying to accomplish... when I called LMG the guy on the phone took about 7 attempts to explain what I wanted.... not good. I'm going to try to get a couple parts blasted tomorrow. I have my feedneck and rtp back in the bath right now. Just awaiting polishing.

yea, dust green will look pukish, which is why I was thinking blues or blacks. $175 seems super steep imo, since I'm guessing the polished parts are already polished, and the others just need sandblasting, and it's one color.

That's really what I'm thinking, and already 90% of my gun is polished up to 2000 grit then buffed with jewelers rough... I just feel like the extra $40 will be spent on quality and attention to detail. I have heard stories of lost parts through these other two, and nothing but praise through caustic... we'll see what happens

Also, I have a buddy with a blast Booth, this price was quoted 100% ready to dip

I am a pretty big fan of the dust grey and polished clear accented markers simliar to the one Bunny posted up a few days ago. The Axe comes in a similiar combo and looks stellar. I would be crystal clear on the "pewter" color. I have seen some call it pewter and it was more of a bluish hue like what came on the ULE bodies. IMO, pewter should be essentially gray.

On a side note, sounds like Ano Tech has raised their prices. I got 15 or so parts done about a year ago, some dust, some polished and only ran me like $120 and they did most of the stripping and polishing/blasting.

One other piece of advise. Be crystal clear on the finish you are looking for. There seems to be a discrepancy between what one place calls dust and what another calls dust. AnoTech actually has dust, satin, and polished finishes. Dust is almost like sandpaper.

Cool cool, ill keep that in mind. When I got the pricing they said they'd strip the parts and Polish the ones that are black already, but they were going to charge me the blasting fee for x amount of parts. That was the same for LMG. But the guy on the phone at LMG didn't sound like he knew what he was talking about.

I'm fine with doing the prep myself, gives me something to do, and its not much anyhow anymore. Its only 5 pieces to strip instead of the whole gun. Then blast the 2/3 of the parts. Should be pretty slick

    1st Round:

Now that I have the file built. Give me some more ideas.

That's awesome! Stoked to get the ball rolling on that!!! Id like it overall to be quite a bit darker, but exactly the contrast I was going for.

My original plan was a lime/electric blue splash... but having the colors splash together, no fade between them. If that makes sense?

Edit, I also think I will be going with the sight rail... if I can find one. Ive had 3 different people pm and fall through

What is the base color for the lime/electric blue splash?

  13. #13
I wanted it to be just solid, like a fade, but instead of them fading into eachother I wanted them to splash into each other. If that answers what your asking?

I wanted blue front green back with just a mess of splash in the middle with the two colors

Well, I'm on my last 2 things to do before this gets sent off! I got my rail and feedneck parts all stripped down and polished for now. Next is blasting my parts and hunting down a used Emag sight rail... you'd think with how many guns have pics of them off people would part with em! Not so much I guess?

Hoping to get all this prep done within the week!

Edit: I do have a snag though, I can't get the cam pin out of my feeneck clamp. It looks like the brass is actually pressed around the little all thread piece and it wont budge at all. And of course it has a hex end on it to use an Allen wrench, but it stripped out on the first try to spin it I've tried grabbing it with a set of pliers but I think ill rip the ears off the clamp?

Probably can't send it for ano with brass and a zinc screw in it right?

Here she sits as of now, I dub it "The Fingerprint Nightmare" haha... I actually think I saw an old thread here called that?

And here is a part that I cant get... apart...

You cant tell from the image very well, but it appears there is "pinch" marks in a couple places around the brass that keep the stud in place... maybe ill have to find a new feedneck for this? Anyone wanna trade for a Redz camlock?

apply 2 nuts to the stud and wrench it out after applying some heat as i believe that its been loctited in place.

  18. #18
Ill give that a shot, im just afraid to bust the brass piece out of the ears on it. Ive already tried some heat on it with no help. Ill try to get better pics with my slr of where its "pinched" in the brass to the threads. I just think its not meant to come apart

try taking measurements of it(height, width, length), as you might be able to use that same piece from PE or Empire.

Ill get some measurements and check it out, may not sweat it too much and just get a different one anyhow.

I have been dreaming of a project with this instead of dust... Engine turning. That would be amazing on the frame/rail/sight, then the rest solid. It would probably take months to perfect it and jig up... but worth it? Yes
