Air Tech developed the gun, and it was produced/distributed by Diablo from 2000 to 2001 - the QC wasn't great, the parts weren't great, and the warranty sucked. Generation-E Paintball took over distribution (and branding) and marketed the Matrix through 2003, with much better QC and hardware from Diablo and a better warranty through Gen-E. Dozens of private-label and custom models were made in the Gen-E years.

DYE bought the rights from the Air Tech guys and produced the DYE Matrix (incorrectly called the DM3), as well as taking over the warranties of earlier markers - the DYE Matrix was essentially the same as the Gen-E but featured DYE regulator, ASA, etc. They found they had a boatload of issues with 3rd-party parts, many of which came with poor installation instructions, suffered from poor tolerances, or were simply poor designs. As a result of being bogged down in warranty-repair issues stemming from 3rd-party products they sent C&Ds to just about everyone making custom Matrix markers or aftermarket parts - unfortunately this killed some great companies along with all the crummy ones. They went on to produce the DM4 (DYE Matrix 2004) which was redesigned and did away with the removable breech system, and more resembled the Matrix as we know it today.

    **edit***
Seeing as there's no additional milling I'd guess that someone had that done, or that a company offered it as an upgrade. I think I've seen one just like it before, but I don't remember where.

Had to look close as the lighting wasn't great to see the milling in the black. This does look like Matrix body from before Dye started making them (the lower milling doesn't go as far back as the Dye ones). Not factory according to the tome of all that is the Matrix:

It does look pretty sweet though! Is the design cut in or is it more like a laser job?

Looks sort of like glass etching but then again I've never dealt with anything like lasering or being cut in.I can get better pictures if it would help.thanks

No worries, I was just curious. Do check out the link though if you are thinking about a Matrix build. Everything you would ever need to know is in there.
