    Official Data Thread

    Deep Blue,

By request I have added this thread to hold the data that is discussed in various threads here in Deep Blue. It is NOT for posting so please don't force me to delete them.

If you think something is appropriate for entry here please post the request in a separate thread for everyone's consideration.

    Thanks

This data graph shows the air pressure buildup behind the ball in a Dark Angel. The solid line represents pressure, the dotted line is a sensor at the end of the barrel and detects when the ball leaves.

The "buy it becuase it's low pressure" Impulse. Looks about the same to me...

Not sure if this was calibrated before testing, I seem to remember the peak pressure being around 60 psi.

Here are the very high res tiff files of the photos. They are about 4 megs each use a cable modem. Go hear and download the whole subdirectory. DO NOT POST these files for discussion in the threads!! Use theme for examination only!! Use the JPG's below for posting.

3D interpretation of ball position in flight path. Upper right circle represents impact points, other circles denote postions in flight measureed in strobe shots. These are cad drawings to scale of the shooting range and strobe positions. If I remember right the shooting distance was 60 ft.

Any 35 MM camer will work.

However you need a setup designed by Egerton Strobe.

You leave the shutter open in a dark room.
Than you hook a strobe up to a sound relay with a delay.
When the gun is fired the strobe fires on a delay and catchs the ball in midair. The flash puts it to film.

Thats how Im guessing they did it.
They can say Im wrong but I probably am not.

    Exclamation

Some of the images are not viewable.

Have you done the same tests on AKA markers, Shockers (new and old), et cetera?

This data thread is a brilliant idea. More information is always more fun.

Interesting images...although there are a number of broken links/removed files. Here's my question:

What gun was used for the ball in flight test photos? More importantly, what caliber was the barrel, and what type of paint was that?

Can you explain how you created the photo setup? I have no experience at analyzing photographs, but it looks like it's a single image created by exposing the film at millisecond intervals. However, at was distance was the camera from the path of the ball, and the barrel? What was the positioning of the mirror in relation to the path of the ball, and at what inclination? I see the markings remaining the same for the ball in the top image seen by the camera, but, the reflected images appear to show rotation. I'm not sure whether I'm seeing a rotation of the ball or the result of different camera angles as it flies past. It looks like the image is showing the ball rotating slowly clockwise along the barrel's lengthwise axis. Is there any chance of more photos from the same test? I wish I had found AO sooner, as all of this is ancient history, but it is quite an incredible read. Thank you for doing these tests and posting your results to us here.

    Laser Tripping

Alrighty, here we go. I have 6 photos crop'd and sized for display. No pics of the setup yet. I got 20 exposures, but about 10 of them are just the ball with no powder/co2 for referencing the air motion. I plan on doing another roll with what I've learned so far. Mainly that I need to control the amount of powder I put in the porting to create the right shot. So without further delay..

These two shots show the actually CO2 air burst following the ball out of the barrel. You'll notice (or maybe not on the resize) that the white cloud only extends about 1/2in back into the barrel. These were firing's 2 & 3 off a fresh 12gram. Firings 3 & 4(not shown) shows wisps of condensed CO2 also, but very slightly.

    CO2 Push1

    CO2 Push2

This pic, again with my mod'd hack job CCI barrel, shows more air current with a small amount of powder.

And finally, the creme de'la creme.. (if only I had set the focus better, argghhh)

Three progressive shots with pretty good powder control. You can see the laser very well in these.

The ball has not exited yet. The pre-expelling powder set off the flash. Very cool.

The ball just exiting the barrel.

The ball 1 inch down range. Again, due to different baby powder loads it's hard to make a good comparision.

So there you go. I'll probably stick another couple up here later, but these are the best I think.

Did I tell you I'd catch the ball or what?

  30. #30
The 4th shot clearly shows that the ball pushes a significant amount of air out the end of the barrel before exiting.
