Okay, I am completely clueless. HOW is someone trying to keep AO from 1mil posts? How can anyone do that? Why would anyone care?

I thought they were deleting whole threads they created. They're probably doing it to piss people off or push the party back.

Is there a better way to calc. the number of posts other than adding up the number on the first forum page?

well as we know post count isnt everything... nor does post count = credibility

as for why... as it was getting close last night some of the postwhores in the chat where comming in and ruining the perfectly good vibe we had... ya know, constantly asking the same questions over and over like bart simpson off his ridalin.

So well as the count got close a couple of us stepped in and well "Did some fall cleaning" and some pruning of old useless threads.

not my fault it took off today.

i think that they are deleting old mails for all the new "post whore" mails that are about to come in, otherwise itll b a 10,000,000 post party:D

The system does not have to parse the entire database each time a user requests a page/thread. The old posts do little to increase the load on the server. If it was an issue, the admins could easily set the forum software to auto prune the forums after a set time. I'm pretty sure that vBulletin support per forum pruning. So friendly corner could only last a few weeks, but tech could go back forever.

Really all you are doing by pruning your own posts is spending your time. It's not really going to help much.
