Does anyone know who made the first marker and why?

I want to say it was a nelspot 007. Now, whether thats right or not im not 100%, but the first paintball guns were made for marking trees/cattle.

The first paint marker was made by Daisy in the 1970's and was used to mark trees and cattle. This was a bolt action Nelspot 007. The first paintball marker that was designed for the use in the sport of paintball what the Splatmaster.

**There was also a pump action Nelspot 007 that most people think about when you say Nelspot. This how ever was not the "Original".

Man I'm OLD! I've played with both of those!

The first time I ever played was with a Splatmaster and to be honest, I hardly remember it. It was '88 or '89 and I played 2 games. It wasn't until '92 when I played again and got hooked. But I have been playing long enough to have owned a pair of JT Whipper Snappers without ear protection:)

Man, now you are REALLY making me feel old. The first time I played we used safety GLASSES. That is what the field handed out! We all got our own after the first time as the fields were all scratched up. I remember upgrading to a pair of JTs (the origianl ones with the lens held in place with zip ties).

Man I'm old.

I still carry zipties. I had forgotten that they were for my goggles!

Actually it was before the 007. It was bolt-action, no pump handle. Called the "Splotchmarker."

I always forget though when the PG was made (not PGP, it's older brother the bolt action, side tube design). But that's also a pretty old one.

Along with the Puma! Forget the date on that but it's way back there too. Those were some of the first 3 paintball markers before the term "paintball" came to be. Even before the company NSG (National Survival Game of Splatmaster fame) was made.

there was a marker older than the 007. the nelspot 707.

the 707 was subbed out to crossman before daisy was brought into it. it featured a funky sheridan-like design... it never sold, crossman dropped the contract, and nelson went elsewhere. This was the only gun before the nelspot. whether it was called the "splotchmarker" is anyone's guess, considering they didn't make very many of them, it's hard for me to imagine a nickname being made for them.

No actually it's stamped right up on the top tube "Splotchmarker" I got to see one in a museum-style case in Tennessee when I went to PTI training. Along with the patent paperwork for it.

Alright, you guys asked for it:
http://www.sonic.net/~baccifam/Paintgunspics/Nelspot-707-LABEL-SUPER-LOW.jpg

That is what the 707's say on the side, and here is what they look like:
http://www.sonic.net/~baccifam/Paintgunspics/nelsons707s.jpg

As someone said earlier they were made around 1970 by crossman.

Here is another gun mentioned, the Puma:
http://www.sonic.net/~baccifam/Paintball/Paintball%20Guns/puma/baccipaintballpuma.jpg

I have heard that the Puma was the first paintball gun made for the game of paintball. But i have also heard that the Splatmaster was the first.

As for the "Splotchmarker" i have heard of them, but never seen one. Supposedly they were invented by someone at daisy, but that is all i know.

I actually have a Splatmaster Rapide. Ive talked to friends and no one has seemed to heard of it before, this is a first. I got it from my brother who used to screw around with cause no one really played paintball around here. My friends and I have mess around with it but we never knew what it was or where it came from.

Squid is correct, the Nel Spot marker for lumberjacks to mark trees. I'm not sure the use for cows, but that was another use.

Wow, I guess I really am old in this sport. We used Uvex safety goggles my first games (safety glasses didn't cut it for us), and JT had their Snappers out about a year later. I still have mine and got a new lense this year because I thought i'd still use it. Never played pre-splatmaster though. The Rapide was out a few years later (cough..semi auto...cough). Knew a guy with a puma, but the LineSI Bushmaster was definately the best marker back in the day. All the guns were nelson clones. There really wasn't much choice past that. The automag was pretty new back then. Now I get back in 12 years later. Wow, a lot has changed. Nice pics on those old guns.

The Rapide was not semi auto, it was double action.

from what i heard, the Puma leaked out of every hole in the body, and was a maintanance nightmare.

as for those 707's... jesus christ man, two next to each other? UGH.

uhh ya, I checked my rapide and it is a semi-automatic marking pistol

No, its double action. Operates similar to sa, but you pull halfway back(trigger), it cocks, then the rest of the way fires it. Trust me, I was there when they came into production.:p

This is true, I remember these guns myself. The double action setup it has would make you think that its a true semi-auto.

My first games were Splatmaster/Rapide and Uvex/Woodstalk, and while I don't have any of that stuff, I DO have all my gear from '91-ish in good shape. Black Snappers (the new lenses are sooo much easier), Indian Springs 60-rnd loaders and squeegee, ViewLoader-II, TASO Nice Butt, and Lapco Grey Spirit. Heck, I still play in this stuff when the mood strikes (and the refs let me!)

that's cause it's BASED on a pellet gun design. A crossman/sheridan valve type.

and Tequila, that picture is PIMP. I miss playing like that.

Greetings,
Actually, the 707 was based on the 150/157 Crosman CO2 pellet pistols.
Here are a couple of shots of my gen 2 150 produced from 1957 to 1967 next to my 707.
From the bottom tube down they are identical internally and externally except for markings - I've had them both apart. The sights are even the same except for radius cut under them where they fit on the barrel.
The 5 different 150's were produced from 1954 until 1967.
This indicates that the 707s were produced BEFORE 1967.
Crosman seems to know nothing about them......but it's clearly Crosman.
