Well, that position I tested for in June... I'm finally in! Should be starting in a few weeks, the paperwork is still being shuffled.

Well, my first job after college will be as a Senior IT Specialist for LVMPD... eventually they'll be giving me a vehicle too if I don't end up working at City Hall. What's great is, I have been getting shot down over and over for entry level jobs... and the one I finally get is a supervisory position! Also, I've been shot down with my requested starting salaries as though it was silly for me to ask... but I'll be getting it now! These people never took me seriously... I got this job because it was heavily weighted on test results, and not how I was judged in an interview as much - every other position was totally interview based.

I got this message in IRC several months ago:

<*Miscue> Argh...
<*Miscue> I got phone call I didn't want to freakin get.
<*RMarks> ex girlfriend?
<*Miscue> No...
<*Miscue> Freakin frustrating. I keep getting narrowed down to top candidates... and someone else gets the freakin job.
<*Miscue> For stupid freakin entry level jobs.
<*Jonneh> tell them you helped al gore program the internet
<****> miscue, not to burst your bubble, but perhaps you're not all that?
<****> I suggest you aim lower.

"I suggest you aim lower." I cannot explain to you how much this torqued me.

I started working on the EMag software after I was told this... it was what fueled me. I needed to prove to myself that this person was completely full of crap and arrogance... and had no idea of what I am capable of.

Well, it looks like I'll be able to play paintball soon... and travel. I'm really looking forward to buying a house, I've been figuring out the logistics on that for a while now.

Yay! :p

Congrats Q. That's cool how you used someone's negative comment to fuel you.

So, this is for the PD? Will you get to carry a gun? LOL!

Cool. I also applied for them too back in 2001. I didn't pass the first part which was a test. Half of the test was about office terminolgy that I had no clue and the other part was about IT related stuff. Did you have a test like that? LMK if they have other IT openings.

Well, the first test was multiple choice tech test they made up... I got a 90% on that one - highest score outta like 70 people. Second test was in a lab, they started you off with a broken computer... and basically had us do like a Microsoft style lab test, if there was such a thing. They had stuff like... making batch files, messing with LMHOST files and working with print servers... etc. They had you put down your solutions in the form of a memo, luckily I just took a business writing course and all I did was write memos. I got a 94 on that. Then they had like 60 various computer components on a table, and you had to identify. Cables, sockets, adaptors, tools, etc... 100% :p Then the last thing was an oral examination which was worth the most, and they didn't ask so much about tech stuff... they would give you situations and ask how you would deal with it... how your prioritize your work and solve problems... stuff like that. They gave me an 82%, which I think is a bunch of crap... should have been higher by my estimation. Oh well, all that has effected is I'll be starting in a few weeks versus a month or two ago... no big deal. People who already were working for the department, like in helpdesk or whatever... or had military experience got a 5% overall score boost... so I think that kinda shafted me a bit... I might have been #1 instead of #2 or 3...

Yeah, PD. No gun, civilian position. Unmarked vehicle I'd imagine...

I did have to pass the same background test as cops... polygraph and all. That was loads of fun, let me tell ya. It's an interrogation.

Do you get to stay where you are (Vegas?!? lucky poo...) or are they making you move? Or are you just looking for a house as a step up?

Well, considering that it's the Vegas PD... yeah. :p

I live at home, so I need a place of my own. It'll be great, I can bring home all the skanks I want without worrying about my mom knowing what I'm up to. Just kidding! I wouldn't do that anyway, but I'm looking forward to escaping from my current life and starting a new one.

No... but my dad has been in a few of the Court TV things, and will be one of the main guys in the "Real CSI" that's supposed to air in London and eventually court TV. He's the crime lab director for the neighboring City of Henderson. His lab is WAy better than Metro's... :p It's basically an extension of Vegas and they film it as if it was Vegas... it's kind of interesting how they are using that department instead of LV... :p I won't explain why, but it's kinda funny.

Don't aim lower, but definitly get better at interviews, for the most part like you said thats all they judge you on.
good posture, speaking, and confidence helps so much during those.

Gratz Cue. My wife just started working for the PD (state PD) too, doing chemistry.

My wife spends all day locked in a room with millions of dollars of drugs. Weird.
