No not the John Wayne type Indians...

Is anyone else tired of talking to Indian tech support call centers? Not only are they hard to talk to and communicate with, they are usually on a crappy VOIP line that has a bad delay and choppy sound.

btw- i heard earthlink just layed off 1300 employees and moved many of the positions to India. Things like this make me mad....but hey whatever helps to increase the bottom line, right?

Dell is almost all Indian support.

Why pay some American, when you can hire 10 people in India for less?

Dell dropped their Indian Tech support, or atleast announced they are going to. They did it after the large volume of complaints.

a whole lot of big companies are doing this. i have read a lot of articles in mags and newspapers recently about this. complaints are going up but the companies make more money.

Chex Systems moved their entire phone center operation to India. Real funny hearing someone with a heavy accent saying," Hello this is Barbie, How may I help you?"

Ha! Now you get a taste of what it is to be an engineering student. I don't mind their accent, I'm used to it. I love Bollywood movies, and have thought about studying Hindi so I don't need subtitles. At one point, I knew a few popular Indian songs... :p

Here's a few Indian actresses I wouldn't mind talking to over tech support:

See, your Barbie just might be a hottie with a difficult accent. :p

Yes but they suck at tech support... besides, they are thousands of miles away on a telephone, what good is that gonna be :)

Btw, my dad had a brush with one of those tech support places in India. If you try hard enough, you can get to a U.S. phone (keep saying talk to their supervisor or something), and explain to that person how the indian support center was useless. My dad actually got through to the president of the company :) it was neat

You know... when I started Comp Sci, it was a great field to get into. If I were 5 years younger and had to do college today, maybe culinary arts would be better. :p There was a point where it was not too hard to get a really good paying job... all gone now.

NFS!!! :( I know guys doing web design for $8 an hour! In-N-Out Burger pays better than that!! WTF!?!?

Now if you have some experience the best bet is to do independent consulting. I make as much doing that 5-10 hrs a week as I do at my 40hr job. :)

There are jobs out there that pay well... but getting them is TOUGH!! Be prepaired to fight if you want to work in this field.

BTW ... I know your bottom Bambi, personaly, she used to work as a remote chat host for the DotCom I used to work for. Very nice chick. (With good english too)

My beef with indian tech support is the fact that most of them are very condensending. I think its the fact that they come from a "Classed" society and the fact that they are employed puts them in one of the upper classes. Its iritating. Unfortunantly I have to deal with them everyday FDC (A major CC front end processor) uses them. :(

This is the next logical step of ghlobalization. It's the same as exporting all those shoe-factory
jobs twenty or so years ago. It's just capitalism.

Yeah, I figure that too. What I'm going to do is, while I'm doing my 9-5... work on my own software projects that handle certain niches until I can be self-sustaining. People pay big bucks for crappy software all the time. Inventory software, stuff made for their profession... etc... specialized stuff. I want to offer something better, for less money. Right now I'm looking at point-of-sale, inventory, medical, and law enforcement type applications.

I figure... I could theoretically have just a few clients and be making bank... and do whatever the hell I want all day because the software is working. At least, that's the goal... I think it's a reasonable aspiration - and not a pipe dream.

You can't make money working for someone else. :p

Me: it is not, it is Mohammad... or Osma... hello FBI.. your mother did not name you DAVE

Ok.. I realize that much of India is not Muslim, and this may be construed as racsist - it was meant as a joke, lets take it as such.

yeah, im an IT student with a certificate in C programming, i know java and vb and a few scripting languages. i make all my money and support my family as an arborist because it pays more. i do independent consulting for spare cash(to play paintball). mostly database or networking stuff. should have focused on networking instead of programming. even if the support and software shops are over seas the actual networks are here.

i toy with network programming(the best of both i guess). like miscue im going to try to write some useful software( internet/network apps) and try to keep my chops while i eternally search for a good IT job.

Dell does not have indian support anymore. Unfortunitly I bought a compaq and had to deal with hps, indian support. I kept on having to ask them to resay what they just said. Then after spending a half hour telling them useless information and waiting on the line. They tell me to call back and choose a different menu option. That was it, I wrote a messege to dell and to hp. I told hp how cruddy there support was. I told dell how much i appreciated there tech support. I realy love there express number program. If you the express number, within 5 min you will have a American technintion. They are also great people. I think they have the best tech support out there for computors.

Hell I deal with this on a daily basis ... I work for a company that is worldwide, and has its World HQ in Saint Louis.

I deal with Chinese, Indian, Israeli, Russian, Brazillian, South African, etc etc ... on a daily basis. Man you want to talk about a culture clash ... we get it everyday.

And you can tell a societies traits by the people who work here ... I havent seen one Israeli hold a door for a women, but yet they (the guys) all give you the evil eye if you dont hold the door for them and go in first.

The tech sector sucks right now thanks to out-sourcing ... I am tempted more and more everyday to turn away from the tech sector and do something more meaningful in the world.

Yeah my dad kept pulling the supervisor thing over and over today with Dell... that makes me angry, Dell used to have awesome tech support, now it seems like they've gone down the metaphorical crapper along with everybody else. :(

Whoa whoa dell got rid of there indian support. Now I can understand if you dont have an express number, but dell has got to have the best tech support ever. I love dell. And realy, the fact that they have good support is what makes me choose a dell over a hp or compaq.

i had a major issue with textbookx.com (they are based in CT, i hate that company right now but thats another story)and every time i spoke with a customer service rep they were indian, but at least i could understand what they were saying through their accent.

back to the IT issue, when i was interning at pharma/accounting companies i swear 90% of their consultants were indian. most of which were packed into a small over crowded room writing code all day.

miscue- is that ashraya rai (sp)?

Stay away from Point of Sales. People who install and sell POS tools are idiots.. the people who use them.. are even bigger idiots, and the folks who do the auditing are Brain Damaged Retards with no hope of ever evolving up into idiots or morons. Take the 35 year old retard at Wendys and subtract about 40iq points and you have yourself a night auditor. But if you seriously want to do POS lemme know ... I do alot of work with POS stuff being that my company processes Credit Cards.

You can't make money working for someone else. :p
I'll have to disagree with that one :) But then again I sorta did work for myself in a weird convoluted way being a stockholder.

Does your freind get these 2000 dollar jobs on a weekly basis? Remember there is a huge difference between making some spare cash and being able to pay the bills on a month to month basis.

Personaly... way back when I worked for Liveworld, they charged between $250 and $400 an hour for my time. I think the smallest project I worked on there was for around $10,000 and the biggest worth well... alot.(I worked on sites like sho.com, hbo.com and alot of other MAJOR entertainment stuff.) Now the big money jobs like that have mostly gone away, folks are afraid to spend their budgets on this sort of stuff since the dot com crash. I think some of it will come back... but it will take some time.

I know what you're talking about. I was in a hospital bed just hours after surgery when I get a phone call at the hospital asking about a POS system I put in over a year ago. I was dumb enough to give them my home phone, and somebody at home was dumb enough to give them my number at the hospital. I was too incoherent in my anesthetic drunkenness to be pissed at the audacity they had to badger me over the phone in my condition. That whole ordeal was a cluster-doodoo with a long story... which even involved the threatening of bodily harm upon me... it's just... a long story. People ripping each other off, nobody speaks English, I end up writing bar code printer drivers for free, I end up losing money in the end... Oh my God. You know, some people get scholarships for school... I deal with the freakin Chinese mafia instead... WTF was I thinking.

Now, with this in mind... I do not EVER want to deal with POS systems on a personal level again. EVER. What I have in mind does not involve dealing with it at that level.
