You must be accepted by the Gods, who reign from high atop mount AGD...

...and you have not proven yourself worthy, mortal.

You can not “Go about becoming” a moderator. It is not something that you can strive to become and suddenly you reach a point that makes those around you want you as a Moderator.

Moderators are ASKED to be Moderators. And you can not ASK to become one. You can not prove yourself “worthy” of being one. You can not perform some magic ritual that transforms you into one (although many have tried… LOL).

Besides, anyone who thinks that being a Moderator is “fun”, needs to think again. It is much work, and more than most would either WANT, or could handle. You become a target for making decisions that MUST be made but are seldom understood by the younger members. Of course some of us have been BOTH Moderators, AND the targets of misunderstandings and survived to tell the tale. LOL

Please do not take my post as a flame.. it is light hearted and aimed to show the underlying humor in your question. In short, if you are asked to become a Moderator, you did what it takes to become one…. Until then, don’t worry about it. ;)

OR you can listen to the Booming Voice from Up High... Army hath spoken. LOL

Actually, Tom started off with only his techs being mods, but after the site became so big so fast, he asked Miscue and myself to help out. Lately it was discovered that the site had good Pacific Time coverage, but Central and Eastern Time Zones were lacking, so he granted mod status to cphilip who had already proven his maturity and knowledge, plus he is on Eastern Time.

Only if the site blooms into something even larger, I doubt another mod will be coming on any time soon.

Exactly correct. Thats how it happened. Well...plus I filled in as Temp Admin while Army was...well...playin Army. And Miscue went and broke his leg and all the others were at Zap Am. Pure happenstance and situational misfortune. However, after I (also Moderating then was Hitmanng, Shartley and Darkripper) filled in for about a week I was asked to come on full time. It's a lot of work and in fact it's not as much fun as you would think. You have to look at each post (wether it's something you are interested in or not)each and every time. Exhausting realy and takes just a bit of the fun out of it.

I will never understand why someone wants to be a moderator. I see the only advantage as being able to fix problems faster if no Moderator is on line but that is rare. Apretiate the moderators that you have.
Thanks Guys

Well, if you're curious... this is what a mod does:

1. Reviews the content of posts.
2. Edits/Deletes rule breaking posts.
3. Monitors #automags chat room.
4. Responds to nasty emails.

Not very glamorous. :p

How we got picked: Somebody out of the blue asked us... caught by surprise, none of us saw it coming.

Perks:
It's kinda cool that you can give people the right information and they are less likely to question it. Saves time, they get a somewhat more assuring answer, which is what they are looking for. (Sure fooled them! They think 'mod' means I know something. :D ) On the other hand, you also become a target for some, I noticed a large amount of criticism the instant I became a mod... and even when I was a temp mod at one point... about a month beforehand. All taken with a grain of salt of course...

Once in a while we might find out about something an entire DAY before you guys do... We get to put our ugly mugs in the 'Meet the Mods' section... Chicks dig us now... (just kidding)

That's about it... Oh, and I'm pretty sure we're automatically disqualified from the contests... haha.

---

We all love AO, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that it's a cool privilege to be able to help out and keep AO a nice place to hang out.

Really, I don't preoccupy myself with the mod thing, and it hasn't changed how I use AO. I hang out in the chat room just like I did. I post just like I did, except I have to be less opinionated on some things... (although I post less often now that I'm so busy with school)

We were AO trolls before and after we were mods... really made no difference to whether or not we lived here. You can be an AO troll too... there's nothing preventing you from the 'Troll' status which is almost the same thing. For example... Army was a legend here well before he was a mod. Many others...

Ah, another prime example. Shartley had more posts in about one month than I have total since Oct 2000... and who doesn't know who he is?! Without a doubt, the King Troll crown rests upon his head. :)

I'm not saying you should go about posting like mad, there are different approaches to 'standing out' here if that's what you're really after... but I personally don't think that's a worthwhile venture. Get your info, interact with some new online buddies... there ya go... you're golden. I think getting the chance to know some really neat people here is one of the best things about AO, and that's really why I keep coming back.

well, i'm sure you have read shartley's posts...

i'm not making fun of shartley, but reading one of his posts is like reading a novel. i have to take advil before i can get through the whole thing. he is very informative, in about 2000 words.

Cha0tic:
One good thing however, is that no one can accuse me of trying to raise my post count by making a lot of one line posts. LOL A lot of 5000 line posts on the other hand…….

I can take the ribbing on my post lengths as long as people also say that they are informative (as you did). Thanks.

Look! A short post! ;)

(Oh, and advice for those who DON’T know me yet…. If you don’t want to REALLY know, don’t ask me. LOL)

Oh! and for your information...I am the only person on AO that Shartley has ever agreed with twice. Took him over 400 words to do so but still he agreed...I think...

shartley
09-13-2001, 11:28 AM
Phil,
You KNOW that is just NOT true! First of all the second time was a partial agreement not a full one, and it only took 385 words. ;)

:D

cphilip
09-13-2001, 11:37 AM
Actually I looked back and found you are only partially correct. You did indeed only use 385 words. The others I had miscounted as words were "Muh Ha Ha Ha Ha ha" and other such things and a bunch of smiles.

However after careful re-examination I found no actual instance where you ever agreed with me at all!

But of course...I was right. :p

Note: For those who have NOT figured it out, Phil and I are NOT serious! It is on the lines of the old “Who’s on first?” skit. It is all in good natured humor.

Shartley,

(Oh, and advice for those who DON’T know me yet…. If you don’t want to REALLY know, don’t ask me. LOL)

You know whats funny? Most people don't ask YOU, but you always have to answer. What are we to do if we don't want YOUR opinion??

shartley
09-14-2001, 11:31 AM
Muzikman:
The last time I knew, this Board System was for conversation. For that to happen, you need at least two participants. And the best conversations often involve differing opinions.

I don’t think I EVER stooped to the level of saying I don’t want to hear someone’s opinion on something. And it is hard to judge people’s intent when reading simple text, but I hope that your comment to me was lighthearted and not a FLAME (as it sounded). My comment (that you quoted) was a JOKE, and the LOL indicated so. It was also part of a string of lighthearted posts.

If your post was anything less than a lighthearted comment, this is neither the time nor place for it. It is also in VERY poor taste considering recent of events. And add to that the good nature of the entire Thread to this point. Like I said, if that was your intent to FLAME, I am very disappointed.

However, I WILL answer your question….. Don’t READ my posts then. That is your right and privilege. As is mine to Post until I am asked NOT to by Tom himself. We will not like everything we read on these Boards, nor every person who Posts here, but we CAN try to use a little maturity and class when commenting TO or ABOUT Posts or People.

Also in this time of added pressures, we can try to avoid unnecessary conflict by thinking a bit before posting potentially inflammatory or anger provoking posts.

Thank you.

Gee... what brought on the hostility? Calm down.

Everyone gets to voice his opinion if he wants too as long as it's within the rules. Being able to ask people *not* to give there opinion is not in the rules. I recomend you ignore the ones you do not like. I know I try to.

Shartley you sure do bring out the beast (not a mispelling BTW) in some folks don't you? ;)

I suggest this confrontation end right now.

Ok...now i just read that ENTIRE thing!I think that deserves some credit! But seriously even though i only have 80-something posts right now i still have read almost every post in every thread and i do all of the 5 things that miscue mentioned:
1. Reviews the content of posts.
2. Edits/Deletes rule breaking posts.
3. Monitors #automags chat room.
4. Responds to nasty emails.
oops guess i should have read those before i copyed and pasted...;)
Anyway...as if this and the little status thingy by my name isnt enough to become a moderator ill try to post a little more(BUT IT TAKES SOOOOOOOOOOOO LONG!)(2-5 min.)
