I would think that wuld violate some rule about single barrels and semi-autos or something. If that's legal why not a nasty typhoon?

Most people use a version of NPPL rules to define this. And no its not leagal because it says so...
Taken from NPPL rules:
5.22. Players may use a single, 68 caliber, pump or semi automatic paintball marker, which consists of
a single barrel and a single trigger. Double action triggers are prohibited. A paintball marker capable of
firing in other than semi auto or pump mode shall be rendered incapable of firing in such mode in such a
manner that a player may not readily change the marker back to such mode during a game and such
that the modification is readily visible to the judges.
