Brassler #4 Round Solid Carbide Dental BUR Packing 8 Microflutes/ and cutting edges.

vs.

Hardened Automag Sear in unheated case hardened form...

yeah You knew it was coming...

4 WINS Brassler #4

4 holes... Like butter... :)

Mind you this was used in a drill press at @ 3024 RPM's

Havent tried it yet but I could probably MILL the sear with the handpeice @ 1/2 Million RPMs

Dont screw with your dentist he'll cut your teeth out!

Im sure my parents will be happy that im using my $1000 bur kit to do machine work :D

Pics to follow...

Sears is a good store, I worked there during high school.

Speaking of sears, Are all mag sear the same?

Butterfingers

nope
the RTP and the Automags are diffrent...

As for the sears...

Im modifying the pivot point so that the ULT will have a shorter chuff resistant pull.

This one time at Sears, this crazy old guy was wandering around screaming"WHERE ARE THE GARDEN WEASELS?!"
Anyway, good luck Butters.

Hmm... I used a regular HSS end mill to put a flat further up the arm of the sear and a regular HSS drill bit to drill my new pivot point when I changed the pivot point on my RTP sear......

Drilled and milled w/o a problem.

Yeah, carbide is good stuff...

I broke 2 NEW cobalt bits before experimenting with alternate methods.

Isn't carbide a little heavy?

What RPM were you spinning them at?

3024 RPM... high speed cobalt bits Craftsman.

I must have used a gallon of oil... for all my efforts i get an oily puddle in concrete and a little divot in the sear.

Bit too much pressure on the press because it wasent cutting= frustration= push harder= breaking

3024RPM? I don't think my mill would do that!

Just an FYI,
If you try those bits I suggested in your other sear thread do not spin them faster than 200 RPM.

My drill press dosent go below 580 RPM's

Like I said I used a HSS (High Speed Steel - The cheap cutting material) spinning at about 600rpm with a drop of oil and it went through like butter.

At 3K rpm, I'm surprised the bit didn't seperate the flutes from it and blow up. That's what happens when you run HSS end mills too fast and try to take a big cut...

High speed dental burs are made out of solid tungsten carbide or surgical stainless steel with Synthetic diamond tips...

They are designed to run at speeds greater than 350,000 RPM's And are safe to use with new age Very High speed air turbine ceramic bearing Handpeices that run close to 1/2 million RPMs.

3024 RPM's is WAY under its rated speed.

I dont know what I was doing wrong... The cobalt bit I was using didnt even scratch the surface.

Hey Butter, if you don't mind my asking, where did you get your hands on a dentist drill or handpiece? Do they just run off of a compressor? How much psi do they run on? Whenever I went to the dentist office and he left the room, I always wanted to play with the drill and start drilling stuff.

Yeah, they run off an oil free dental compressor. They usually will run 400,000 RPM @ 32psi. Although not reccomended, faster at higher pressures.

Here at school they provide you will all that stuff...

Nice burr. I personaly use PC board carbide drills, good for up to 50,000RPM although i run mine in the 1000 - 6000 rpm range.

You are going to school to become a dentist? Will you get in trouble if you break your drill?

Butterfingers

Probably...

Or...Ill pull one of these...

Me: "Hey Roger I think the handpeice you issued me is defective... do you concur"

Roger: "Hmm how did that happen..."

Me: "I dunno it just stopped working, you know these things are older than me"

Roger: "Ok don't break this one"

Or somthing like that...

I didnt use the handpeice for the Sear work I put the bur in a drill press and it cut.

I did however use a handpeice to mill a grove in my automag rail... It didnt work too well the aluminum is too soft it clogs up the flutes WAY too fast.

How much do the burrs go for?

Butterfingers

if you buy a 50 pack they are about 98 cents each.
