Do you need a prototype to apply for a patent? And how long do patents last now? I need to know because if I make my idea happen, I dont want SP or anyone else stealing my idea.

No, and long enough for your design to become obsolete.

I think it's something like 14 years, but I could be wrong.

Patents last 20 years, plus there are rules for extensions. And possible theft is more a concern of how broad the patent is.

Visit http://www.uspto.gov/main/patents.htm for more info.

Patents last 20 years from the date of filing, and you do not need a working prototype, though it might help to have a concept piece completed so that you can word the patent properly.

Thats what I was thinking. A drawing is good, but a working prototype is better. This has been really helpful. Thanks.

You need to consult a patent lawyer. You will not be able to file a patent application by yourself (to the best of my knowledge). But none the less good luck
