Someone should make a sticky with the appropriate loctite kinds and their reccomended uses.

Currently I use 545 for my air fittings. I was told it should be ok -- it's a thread sealer not a thread locker. That is still kosher, correct?

I'll make a list tonight.

545 works for air fittings.

Awesome thanks :) I always get confused wether to use this or that on certain things. I'm sure it'll help!

I, for the life of me, cannot find loc-tite here in any stores around town. What I found as a substitute at a auto parts store is this stuff called permatex. It comes in like 4 grades. Blue is the best, red is just a little too strong, green is too runny, and purple I have never tried.

I had to get mine from my local wholesale tool supplier.

Permatex makes locktight.. Red is Heavy Duty and tough to get apart. Blue is medium duty, made to release easier than red. Green is a penetrating style, made to lock things that are already assembled (which is why it is so stinking runny) and purple is the light duty, what you should be using on your fittings on paint markers. BUT, since noone on the planet carries purple, blue works fine.

P.s. there are like 15 different reds... just dont use it on your marker, its a bad idea.

Permatex does NOT make loctite. Henkel makes Loctite. Permatex makes knock-off threadlocking fluids. :-P

http://www.loctite.com go to the literature section, and download the "Do-It-Right Guide" Acrobat file. Good reading. --Funk

I do believe the 545 that I have dries purple. It most certainly is either a DARK DARK red or a purple as a liquid.

Wow, I feel like a jack hole...

Permatex does NOT make loc-tite, they make threadlocker. DOH!! Well, the thread locker works great anyway.

PERMATEX THREADLOCKER (found in MOST automotive stores)
_________________________________________________
Red= High Strength
Blue= Medum Strength
Purple= Low Strength (hard to find anywhere!)
Green= Penetrating, for pre-assembled parts
White= Thread Sealer
Pie= Human Consumption

Stay away from the red
Blue is fine, purple is fine
green will work itself into places where it doesnt belong
White is great for air fittings, and is not really a thread locker, just a liquid replacement for thread tape.
Pie is good.
