i used to have the same problem. if they worked before and suddenly stopped working, as far as i know there's no fixing it other than reformatting. it boggled my mind as i'm sure it does yours.

If you are using WinXP with SP1 then you may be f'ed .... once SP1 was installed then all Javascripting and Java Applets got handled with Windows Java VM. And in most cases it just wont work. You can check under;

Tools => Internet Options => Advanced

And look for the check box concerning VM handling ... see if it gives you an option to use Suns VM over M$ VM and check that. You will then need to restart IE.

If that doesnt help, then just d/l netscape, opera, etc ... and other browser other then IE.

Hope that helps you out.

Okay right click on My Computer and select properties ...

Under the General tab you should see a system heading, this will tell you what OS you have running (XP Home or Pro) and will show if SP1 (service pack 1) is installed or not. If it is installed, which if you update your OS on a regular basis it is, then you will see this problem.

It really is an issue with SP1a, but SP1a shows itself as SP1 and you really wouldnt know it was there until you encounter this VM issue. Here is a link that talks about it somewhat;

http://www.updatexp.com/windowsxpservicepack1.html

Try to d/l the JRE from Sun itself, http://java.sun.com and see if that helps you also.

The first thing I would personaly try would be to get the JRE from sun. I have had pretty good luck with that fix for most Java issues.

DO NOT REFORMAT.

Jeez.

Java was ordered taken out of windows by the courts. You can get Java from the link below. It will install over the web, etc. Its the same thing windows has always had, but you have to download it since Microsoft cant put it in Windows built in anymore.

Anyone who tells you to reformat, or you cant get it is full of it...lol. While its not part of windows anymore, its easily added back in from Sun Microsystems site (the creators of Java).

Something may be interfering. Try this.

Download the manual install one (the downloadable EXE). Reboot your computer, then during the reboot start tapping F8 about once a second until you get the WINDOWS BOOT MENU ... choose SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. Once in safe mode (a very generic version of windows used for troubleshooting) go and run that file you downloaded. Then reboot. See if that helps.

Otherwise you might have to tweak the registry. My gf had an issue where I couldn't get Java to load on her PC and i had to edit some stuff to get it to load (found info on the net for it). Fun stuff

AHhhhhhhhhhhhh

Just thought of something

When my mom refortmated last time, somehow she renamed the hard drive E: instead of C: I have noticed it caused problems installing games the first few times. But you just sellect E and it works....

BUT Java does not give you a choice, just a pop up asking if you want to download.... How do I get the program to DL and then install it... And select E????????????????????

Map a C drive to your E drive. ... sure its a hack solution but it does work :) If you already have a drive there you will need to move it to a different letter. XP will allow you to do that provided its not the boot drive.
