View Full Version : I love beater cars

My dad used to have an 89 Mercury Grand Maruis. It was a boat.

The engine light was just an indicator that the engine light still worked.

One day after paintball my friends and I were in the boat. At a light they said, "Uh, dude, there's smoke coming out from under the hood." I said, "Don't worry about it, that's normal."

When it rained, I could take a turn with the wheels spinning out and swerving into the turn. Car could u-turn with just a quarter-turn of the steering wheel.

You couldn't lock the doors because the keys didn't unlock the doors. You could unlock the door by reaching in through that small window by the mirror and 'breaking-in'. You couldn't lower the windows or they would stay down. They could be coaxed into going up if you pushed on the window switch thing and pulling the window with your hand at the same time.

I loved that car.

My high school car was a 93 Ford Escort. The only way to get into the passenger side was through the driver side. We were afraid that the door would fall off. I didn't need a speedometer, I could tell how fast I was going by which part of the car was vibrating.

Wagons rule.

Thats Ford at its best.

Get a beater chevy or dodge, you can beat on it just as much, yet it will hold up :)

My dad had a hard time facing reality. hehehe

The Grand Maruis's engine just went to crap, so what did my dad do? Spent a few grand fixing the car up, and a new engine. Junked it after 250,000 when he realized how horribly ghetto (awesome) the car was getting. Bad alternator caused him to miss work and then he junked it.

Little sister took the helm of the Escort. She fell asleep at the wheel going 60. Hit a curb, hit the curb on the other side of the street. Cracked the radiator, bumper cover shattered. Little sister also scraped the entire side of my mom's car. And somehow ended up causing the hood to be bent up.

Mass air flow sensor wasn't working. Engine ran either too rich or too lean. You'd be at a light trying to make a left turn and realize you've got the gas to the floor and the car isn't moving. My dad got the smart idea of driving it to his uncle's shop a half hour away. I believe the pistons fused with the block. hehehe.

Oh, and somehow the Escort's tire rod snapped. I got tricked into running errands that saved my life. I was supposed to be on the highway, but ran errands in town when it snapped. It was funny looking to see both tired pointed inwards though.

Junked because a $60 part went bad? Well its a ford, so ok I guess. And why didn't you just change the sensor, its not exactly an expensive part.

my first car is going to be a nice junker civic.

It is nice knowing someone who works at a used Honda dealership, and can get one for pretty cheap

Ummm a MAF is an relatively expensive part. 140 for most new ones, and you cant find a rebuilt MAF that i know of. And btw, for MOST people, a 140 sensor is expensive. And i drive an Oldsmobile and used to own a pontiac, before that driving a GMC and also having multiple friends own Chevys, it doesn't matter if its ford or GMC, its most likely not the highest quality so there goes your Chevy or GMC or Mopar is god theory.

Actually they use companies who can provide the best value within the standards set for the item, not necessarily the cheapest. To even be eligible to bid you need at least QS (Quality Standards) certification, ISO is a bonus as well as innovative technology, enviromental concerns and the ability for constant improvement.
The company I work for bids on and has contracts with GM, Ford , Damlier Chrysler, Bombardier, Harley Davidson, Aston Martin, Mazda and Volkswagon. We are currently in the process of Being certified for Toyota and possibly Nissan. This is all oem equipment, after market parts are another thing.

So one should tell your company they could save money by just submitting their bids to Ford instead of Aston Martin. It would save paperwork for everybody :)

I never they last forever. I just said chevy outpreforms ford, and mopar outpreforms chevy. Most of my mopar gloating is about older muslce cars, and jeeps. Almost any old muscle car you buy is going to keep breaking, nomatter who made it, I just think the mopars look the best, and are some of the best performing. Jeeps, now I would like to see you pit a blazer or explorer against a jeep offroading (this is keeping it mostly stock, hell my camaro will do great offroad if I modify it enough). The jeeps were never really made for towing, but that I6 has plenty of power, and get a grand cherokee with the 360, and that will probably tow your house down (given it probably won't beat vehicles designed just for towing). Ford pickups, well they just suck :) The front suspention on the 4x4's sucks, and they break more. And dodge has the cummings diesel which just owns :)
