View Full Version : Asphalt is Soft?!?

In a recent news release the NPPL stated, "Asphalt is regarded as a soft surface which absorbs shock,"

Guess I had better not complain next time I fall of my bike as the "soft" asphalt is there to cushion my fall. :p

I think someone in the NPPL has been dropped on their head a couple of times too many if they think asphalt is soft and compares with grass. :tard:

Geez.

Beats the hell out of concrete. Besides, you get a layer of turf-looking stuff over it, so it won't be that bad.

If you're gonna be a baby about it, there's a little known invention called knee-pads... ;)

Asphalt is soft around here... but then it is July in Texas.

That's why we pave with concerete out here. A couple of weeks of big trucks on an asphalt road out here in the summer and you already have ruts.

True. In Phoenix, they've had to close the runways at Sky Harbor when the air temp is over 120, b/c the tarmac gets too soft, and the planes sink. This usually happens at least 1-2 times each summer.

Another interesting facet of this issue is that there are times when you can land a c-130 but you couldn't ride a bike across the same runway.

Even concrete with a good turf is fine.

As long as you don't cheap out on turf its all good.

That could be because the weight on the C-130 is more spread out compared to a bike where all the weight is on 2 points.

Ya, but two points to consider:

1- The NPPL spokes twit said the Asphalt is soft. Not the turf.
2- That ain't good turf. Looks little more than a very thin green carpet.

Have you seen this turf in person? A DM4 LOOKS like an overpriced nerf gun, too.

And Asphault is soft, compared to other surfaces in the area (concrete, and lots of it) that they could have laid the turf over. I believe that's what they were trying to say rather than, "Asphault is the new NPPL playing surface."

Yea. And baseball bats are soft when compared to steel pipe. Still don't want hit with either. :p

The NPPL guy compares the surface with grass....

The NPPL had two choices: concrete or asphault.

So yes, gimme the baseball bat, please, as long as you wrap in in bubble wrap like the NPPL is trying to do. :p

I'll sneak on to a field Sunday for you and slide on it and let you know how it is. :D
