More than likely its a camera sitting on a tripod taking time lapse pictures automatically, and caught an amazing photo. Surprised that wouldn't fry the camera or film though.

Actually,

so im living here at school and i live on top of this great hill. well i had been in the basement for around an hour before this due to a possible tornado, which for better or worse didnt hit here

(i was hoping for a SMALL tornado, as this school was hit a year ago, and the mathmatical odds of that happening with in around 14 months are so low it would have just be increidble)

well, i like to shoot out my window when storms are close, so i was doing just that. shooting stopped down to i think around F10 because the storm was close and i wanted 30 second expousers to get as many bolts as possible. well, JUST before the shutter closed the brightest loudest thing happens... the tree 20 yards from my window gets hit. as evidenced by this picture. yeah i wish the quality was a little better, but im very happy considering i think i just bested the luck of what most people here will ever get...

Had the same thing happen to me when I was backing out of my driveway. It was so bright. It looked like daytime for a second. It was unbelievable.

I dunno, there are some pretty sensible naysayers on the forums. He's not providing the original shot - it has been photoshopped. I've seen trees and poles get hit by lightening and the ground underneath them is always messed up...didn't really see much evidence of that.

I'll bet that got rid of that pesky chipmunk that was living in that tree...

quite a spectacular pic for sure! two days ago we had a pretty nasty storm go through, had the standard thunder and lightning. There was one strike though that hit about 20 feet from our house which was exactly where i was looking out my window at the time. obviously i had a few choice words to say after that, i've never been that freaked by thunder and lightning! Definitly the loudest thing i've heard in a while, killed the power in my house and my high dollar 56k modem

;)

Good stuff though, the thunder/lightning duo are very cool!

I would love to see a full-res version of the uncropped photo...

It was a much more interesting picture before he chopped it up.

Tyrion: It's real. He posted full, non-PS'ed versions of it, and also had the backing of several people who have experienced similar things first-hand.

I'm not too sure if the rest of you caught this, but he said he was using 30 sec exposure so those bolts probably didnt happen at the same time.

nobody cares about the ones in the background, lol.

the mortar one looks kinda photoshopped to me.

Read the whole thread about the pictures and look at the before picture, picture of the damaged tree, and the uncropped version of the strike.

There's no way that's photoshopped.

If it was, the guy belongs at ILM or someother high end special effects company. ;)

i think he's saying that the timing of the shot is great making this an amaizing photo (unless its a photochopped). The mortar must be going at some speed.

Yea, exactly. Supposedly my friend recieved that photo from a soldier thats stationed in Iraq, and he posted it on another forum i frequent. But yea, i suppose it might be photoshopped...I just highly doubt it.

The cameraman must have taken a crap load of pictures to get that one :) (If its real...)

Can you please explain to me what's so funny about it? I'm pretty sure its not photoshopped.

i think it probably is i mean the speed a mortar goes at it probably would be blurry, i mean even in paintball pictures where you can see the ball in the air you can see like 2 faded ones behind it

Because the camera they are using is not fast enough. Perhaps this was a ultra fast camera. I'm still voting for it's photoshoped though.

who every said it was taken by a picture camera it could be taken by a video camera and then they split the sceen/picture out that is how most people with computers today can get such great pictures.......

slarty, in regard to your post 2 above mine (EDIT: oops, i mean 2nd from bottom of 1st page, didnt realise there were 2 pages), the guy wasn't talking about the lightning. he was talking about another pic of soldiers shooting a mortar which is about mid-thread.

ANYWAY ... nice lightning pic :) :)
