That's just great.

Make those of us who PAY for our programs suffer because you are cheap, ignorant morons who like to pirate software.

Never mind the fact that student liscense of Premium CS are only $400 over at journeyed.com:

http://www.journeyed.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe?SKW=adobeloop&FNM=20&UID=9392072921224451&GEN0=&GEN1=&GEN2=&GEN3=&GEN4=&GEN5=&GEN6=&GEN7=&GEN8=&GEN9=index2.html

Compared to what, $1100 for the commercial liscenses. Though no commercial work etc. on them.

You do, of course realize that piracy is illegal. Right?

It's scum that resorts to piracy who cause activation nightmares for legit users(MS Windows XP, Adobe, etc.). Thank god piracy problems on the mac are low...

So think, will you? Can't afford the commercial version and not a student? Tough.... Life sucks. It IS a professional application, anyhow. Adobe Photoshop Elements probably would be a better purchase for you. The majority of consumers(not prosumers or professionals)will NEVER need the tools found in the $600 full fledged Photoshop CS.

Who does piracy hurt?.

The global economy

Illegal distribution of software affects the worldwide economy. With an estimated 36% piracy rate globally, the economic effects are significant. In 2001, according to the Business Software Alliance, piracy cost the global economy over US$13 billion dollars in lost tax revenues that would benefit local communities. Hundreds of thousands of jobs in software and related industries were also lost.

Legitimate software users

Software piracy stifles innovation. The cost of combating software piracy, plus lost revenues, could be spent on research and development to benefit users.

Users of pirated software

Pirated software can carry viruses or may not function at all. Unlicensed users do not receive quality documentation and are not entitled to receive technical support or product upgrades, patches, or updates. Organizational productivity also suffers when employees use pirated products. Pirated software often leads to version control problems that prevent employees from efficiently sharing files, while driving up IT support costs.

=====================

There are significant financial and legal penalties for software piracy. Illegal distribution and use of software can result in prison terms of up to five years, and felony charges with fines up to US$250,000. In civil litigation against those who illegally distribute Adobe software, Adobe can obtain the higher of its lost profits, the infringer's profits, or statutory damages of up to $US150,000 per product infringed, plus Adobe's attorney fees.

But the costs are not measured in dollars alone. When organizations are legally prosecuted for software piracy, they also suffer significant damage to their reputation.

Felony charges? Fines up to $250,000? Five years? Adobe can sue you[up to $150,000 per product and legal fees]? Have fun! BTW, corporate lawyers are very, very expensive per hour.

Jimmy Dean, that post was made in direct regard to the other replies in this thread. If you would care to look through it, you would see:

b) I listed other, cheaper alternatives.

They were:

So, yes, there WAS information in there pertinent to your thread.

My legal response was not directed at you, JimmyDean, it was in DIRECT response to the posts made by:

Benifica4ever

Although I feel Benifica4ever and _tMAN were just kidding. CaptaiN_Jack literally gave you step-by-step directions for software piracy. That is something that should not be tolerated. There are options to obtain Photoshop CS and the Creative Suite LEGALLY on a low budget. Piracy is not one of them.

==========

Jasc Paint Shop Pro is a low-end application IMHO, at least when I used it, compared to other offerings on the market. PhotoShop is a much better program, albeit with a much steeper learning curve. The results are worth it though.

==========

Two other things I would try to budget for. A good book or two (if you get Elements, get a book about Elements. There are many different things between it and Photoshop CS) and

Book suggestions:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=296828&pfp=SEARCH <- Sybex is a good publisher. Their Maya books were rather helpful for me.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=313255&pfp=SEARCH

Good luck.

note the those who suggested d/l Photoshop CS.

I own the suite, so that may change this information, but it takes two DVDs to install the suite. Thats quite a few gigabytes of information. Approximately 3gb per app... Sure, theres compression, but...

Bluestrike, I'm the design ed of our school news magazine, so yes, I do need a lot of the features photoshop provides. Not only that, but I recieved a copy from the school, not from kazaa. I think we have all learned that pirating is bad from Blackbeard and Jack Sparrow, so don't do it. Pirates used to get hanged. You don't want to be hanged, do you?

I have both photo shop by adobe and paintshop by jasc

Paintshop is a very powerful editing program as a fraction of the price of adobe. I think my liscence costed me around 80$ back when I got it ( it's a few versions outdated )
It can do almost everything that photoshop can do and it's ALOT more user friendly. If you're new to graphics I highly recommend paint shop pro. It will teach you how graphics come to be, techniques and the professional terms. It will teach you how to use layers, and masks, along with a color curve (aka histogram).

So why Adobe?

Well you get what you pay for. Photo shop does have features that paintshop doesn't have. For one, it has more then 3 times the filters. Also alot of the effects you can generate with paintshop are automated in photoshop. Adobe has become the industries standart. So if you intend to become anywhere near professional you will want to know how to use photoshop because that's what's going to be on your work computer.

As for price, I have NO CLUE what paintshop pro is running right now. I just bought Adobe's photoshop for 360$ on ebay. I've only had it for a week so I may not be totally qualified to compare the two programs, but I CAN say there are 100 times more tutorials out there for photoshop and quite frankly I'm loosing sight of my beloved paintshop pro.

Oh yeah, one more thing, you better have at least 512meg of ram in your machine cause this thing is a hungry monster. I've crashed the program 3 times already when my rescourses dumped on me. I think I'll be ordering a second screen and another 512mb or ram here soon.

Can you blend two pcitures and cut and copy from one picture to another in Piant Pro or is it mostly for enhancing your digital photos?

bornl33t
07-30-2004, 09:43 AM
well here's a screen shoot... just typical stuff but it shows the complexity of paintshop pretty well...so to answer your question about enhancing photos, it CAN enhance photos but can be used for much more.

and then about the blending, there are many modes to the blend command....just like in photo shop, just not as many.

"Setting the Tab Options

To set the Flood Fill tool options:

1 Activate the Flood Fill tool by clicking its button on the Tool palette or in the Tool Selection menu of the Tool Options palette.

2 Choose a fill style from the Fill style drop-down box. You can use a solid color, a pattern, or one of several gradients.

3 From the Blend Mode drop-down box, choose a mode other than Normal if you want the pixels of the underlying image to affect the Flood Fill colors. The same choices are used for the Layer blend modes.

4 Select a texture from the Paper Texture drop-down box if you want to add a textured effect.

5 In the Match mode drop-down box, select a method for determining which pixels are covered. The modes select the pixels using the following methods:

· RGB Value covers pixels with matching RGB values,

· Hue covers pixels with matching hue values,

· Brightness covers pixels with matching luminance values, and

· None covers all pixels.

6 Use the numeric edit controls of the Tolerance box to enter a setting. The Tolerance value determines how closely the color of a pixel must match the color of the selected pixel before it is overwritten. The Tolerance box uses a scale of 0 to 200, with 0 being no tolerance (only pixels with a perfect match are filled), and 200 being total tolerance (all pixels are filled).

7 Set the Opacity for the fill. At 100% opacity, the paint covers everything; at 1%, the paint is almost transparent.

8 Select the Sample Merged check box to have the Match mode select pixels from the entire image. Clear the check box to limit it to the current (active) layer.

9 Click tab 2 to bring it to the front.

Virginia See, Jasc Software, Inc."

One other thing I should mension is that my license for paintshop included and animation workshop that has been really helpfull with editing animated gifs. On that note I think photo shop has something similar????? I just haven't had time to play with it yet...

First off,

CaptaiN_Jack - You are the one that SUGGESTED piracy. So now you are attempting to throw your ball to me?

Notice I said consumers. You would probably be more like a prosumer as you need it for work. The majority don't. Don't try and read between the lines. Besides, your newspaper needs it, because they most likely use InDesign or QuarkXpress to design the paper.

Dean,
