Today's column begins discussing something that we all see every time we watch a good Motorcycle race... The lean.

When a bike goes to turn, it leans naturally to the side. We've all seen the World Super Bike monkeys hanging off of the side of their bike dragging their knees. Such as shown here:

Now, many think that this is so they can turn harder. This is not the case though. Really, this is so they know how much farther they have to lean before they lose traction and start dragging something important.

The knee is constant length and they know how close they are to the ground based on their knee dragging.

Now, how can I use this in my driving you might be asking. Well I'm glad you asked. The knee drag is a very important tool in driving. It lets you know where you are and how close to your limits you are. Consider these fine examples of knee dragging in other forms of racing...

err, this example. The skill shown allows him to cut a quick turn around that column

Now, you might say "But I don't have a bike, this can't help me."

But you would be wrong. Consider this example. Look at how hard a turn he is taking, but the entire time, he knows his limits due to his dragging knee

or perhaps for the lower budget racers, something more like this might show you what you are missing in your lap times

Yes, dragging your knee is a valuable tool that you too can use in your driving techniques. It is powerful at showing you your limits. So get out there and start practicing. You don't need to be moving to really train either. A playground is all that you need to practice

But that is an advanced technique shown. Many would rather start training in the saftey of their own home. Something like this would be more appropriate

With a little trainnig, you too can be as extreme as the drivers that you see on tv and here.

And one day, you too, can be like this racer.

Remember: the longer your forks, the wider you must spread your legs

anyone with osgood-schlatters knows why whenever i see something like that, i grab my knee and fall into a fetal position.
