Well, I just picked up a copy, and I have yet to play it. Gotta get thru work first. Anyone actually play it yet? I'm pretty excited, I remember playing the original years ago when I was a kid.

No kidding. I keep watching the clock, I swear it's gonna start going backwards. Looks like eb upped the price a bit too.

Ya, you should be able to run it. Another 512MB of Ram wouldn't hurt, but you should be fine.

I got it yesterday. There's another thread a few pages long on it.

I'm running it at 1024x768 on Medium Quality with:
1.2GHz Athlon T-Bird
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
512mb ram
7200rpm hdd
XP Corp

It runs decent, kinda choppy at times. Probobly gonna upgrade soon to:
Epox EP-8RDA3+
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton" Core
XFX GeForce 6800
512mb PC-3200
WD 74gb Raptor

But anyway, the game is f'in awesome. The graphics are incredible. Game's pretty creepy too, and I love the music.

The opening song is the only piece of true music. There are some minor background sequences, but minor and don't last long.

Best scary game EVAR. Only thing that comes close to touching this is AVP2 Marine missions, but this is scarier beyond explanation. It's incredibly intense.

Oh, and for those of you that are thinking about getting the strategy guide, don't. You'll ruin the surprises!

This afternoon I was ambushed by 2 imps. I'm surprised I killed them because my arm was shaking like crazy. I can only go in 30 minute increments once a day. 30 minutes a day is the perfect dosage.

Nope I need to find the PDA of some administration guy. I was backtracking my steps to find it and ran into a crapload of imps and a pinky demon. I still haven't found it.

Hhehe. Played for 18 hours straight yesterday. Quite a few good scares.
Played it though on veteran the first time. Going back through it on nightmare now.
Great classic shooter style FPS.

Picked this up today too. Good game, very intense! been playing for about 5 hours now and Im getting arm cramps from the tension. My take on it: Great game so far, nothing really new about it, but the graphics are incredible, the audio effects add to the suspense incredibly (a good sub helps), story is so-so (as far as i have seen). Someone mentioned AVP2 and i have to say i like doom3 less. AVP2 is scary, has an ok story, and incredibly diverse gameplay. But overall Doom3 is a lot of fun.

One complaint: you would think with all the advanced technology there is on this mars establishment that someone would figure out a light on the gun is worth more than the sun! We do it now for cryin out loud, what were they thinking!

Skoad
08-05-2004, 04:01 AM
I think they meant to have it that dark with flashlight seperate.

It makes it more intense when your in a very very dimmly lighted room or one with strobe lights and your getting attacked by stuff.

There are already a few small D3 mods out. One where you do have a light on your gun, one where the little roaming sentry follows you around everywhere, and some others I can't remember at this time.

WickeDKlowN
08-05-2004, 09:48 AM
I like not being able to use the light and gun at the same time. It makes the game just that much more or a challenge.

Well I played it last night myself. Good game, very scary. I think I'm gonna try it tonight with the lights off. I do that with the Thief series and it's very cool. When I saw one of the imps for the first time, I thought, crap they look alot better now.

Pretty sure the Xbox version isn't out for a few months. Edit: Gamespy has the date set at October 4, 2004

I like not being able to access the flashlight at the same time as the gun. It adds to the scariness. Creeping around in the dark, and then something jumps out at you and you got nothing in your hand but a light, heh, it good that way. I do like the fact that they didn't include batteries for the light. It just works all the time. That drives me nuts in other games.

Edit: Does not being able to lean bug anybody else? It was kind of a let down for me. Surprising too.

jpdgas
08-05-2004, 10:40 AM
I know the separate flashlight is intentional, and yes, it does add challenge and scaryness...but c'mon, I'm just sayin...

and yes, no lean is a bummer

Planet Doom has a flashlight mod that may be worth DLing. It adds the flashlight to the pistol, which may be handy. :/

You took words right out of my mouth. I have given up tryin to keep my computer up with games. It costs too much. The graphics might not be as good on xbox but its a hell of a lot cheaper. I have been so worried about when halo 2 is coming out I didnt even know if doom 3 would be out for xbox.

Careful what Mod's yu download. Someone already released a supposed 'co-op mod' but all it does is crash your game and jack your CD-Key.

FutureMagOwner
08-05-2004, 04:24 PM
well game spy tends to not find a use for stealing cd keys from people :)

but anyway i dont have a problem with the flash light i use the classic arrow keys with stuff along the sides so i just bound flash light to enter so i just tap enter to switch back and forth between the light and shotgun or something

and im running this on a 1.5 ghz p4 with 512 ram and a geforce 5600 fx at 800x600 with high graphics setting and dont really have a problem with slow down (it does happen a little bit in some places but not a whole bunch)

played it, didn't like it. There are 100 games like this out there and this one didn't make me think "oh wow!" its too dark, like all the time, its running around the same corridors tryin to find some swith to flick or PDA to pick up, getting lost and getting bored. Each to their own, but Im taking this copy back.

Half Life 2 looks better IMO.

i agree it is the same "classic" first person shooter but there is no denying the graphics are excellent, AI i very good, and its all around fun.

is it worth the $55 or $65 bucks........well it depends on how bad you want to play it
