If it's a Digital-8 or Mini-DV cam you just plug in the fire wire cable. If it's just a normal VHS, VHS-c, or 8mm then you can use a video capture device such as the cheap but affective Digital Video Creator 80 (http://www.pinnaclesys.com/ProductPage_n.asp?Product_ID=1427&Langue_ID=7). They make more advanced models for more money, but this does a good entry level job. It's simple to use not bad quality.

That's assuming he has firewire on his laptop. You could buy a firewire PC card or USB2 if the camera supports it.

I seriously doubt it. If you've got a PC card slot, you could get a firewire PC card that would do the trick.

what kind of camera is it? if its one that Muz mentioned, you'll only need the PC Card to FireWire converter, if you have a non DV camera, you'll need the Camera-DV Converter too.
