ShockTech has finally created a product in reponse to us Halo users breaking numerous drive cones... What is it? An aluminum drive cone! YAY!

They also have aluminum rip drive knobs, though I don't really see the functional purpose of it. Then again, I've never broken a rip drive knob, maybe other people have.

$34.99 for both, $29.99 for cone only. I got mine ordered!

Edit: Sorry if this is a repost, I tried searching, nothing came up

Edit 10/01/04 - My drivecone and rip knob came in today, here's a few pix:

Cone is very light and well constructed, same with the knob. At first glance I'm very impressed!

Quick question:

Couldnt this possibly break paint? If the plastic broke, that means alot of stress was put on them, and they may have flexxed and savved some paint. But this aluminum wont flex or anything.

I dont own a Halo, so this may be a stupid question.

It's a very true scenario. Only time will tell to see if this is a worthwhile addition.

I'd assume the tested it pretty thoroughly.

I dont know how extensively shocktech tests all their products. I remember when that matrix delrin bolt sleave came out and guys were putting it in there guns and the delrin would crack. Maybe someone got theirs to work, but when i was gonna buy one for mine, multiple people told horror stories about their bolts. But that probably has nothing to do with this drive cone. Ive broken drive cones twice on my halo, and I too will probably pick up one of this (in a nasty green to go against my red halo :tard: )

Wow... for the paintballer that has everything..

I never actually broke a drive cone on my halo.. I broken boards , and shells.. now if only they made them in aluminum :D

I WANT ALUMINUM FREAKING HALO SHELLS.

No, seriously. I'm about to be on my third set in 4 months.

I saw this today, said, "psh, I don't need that."

Went out today and played, broke my drive cone. Crap!

And I 2nd the shells motion... mine keep getting worse... and worse... and worse. A $120 hopper held together completely by duct tape.

Most of the problems with the HALO drive cone is that stupid tab on the bottom that retains the spring. Since it is molded on it is incredibly weak. The aluminium would solve the problem I had to mod mine with a short screw to keep the spring from coming off. I like it.

I don't know if I'd really want the motor to have to work on both an Al drive cone and rip drive knob when it's designed to spin very light plastic parts.

Does anyone think these parts would cause either slower speed or shortened battery life?

What we did to solve this issue is that we cut both the lower tab and inserted a small screw, the cut the tabs that push the balls and inserted some rubber nipples. The lower screw tab on the cone works great and we haven't had any issues for months plus since the rubber nipples are flexible, you don't have problems if the balls take too much stress from the push. Maybe it's kinda hard to explain so I'll try and add some pics of the "moded" cones later on.

G' day!

I'm going to order a AL one and see how many holes I can drill in to it to make it ligher but hopefully keep enough metal on it from falling apart.

Because 100+30=200?

120(new halo)+20(rip)+35(cone/rip knob)+25ish(victory board)

that equals 200

120(new halo)+20(rip)+35(cone/rip knob)+25ish(victory board)

that equals 200

new halo is 100 on paintball gateway and it isn't a special, victory board is complete un-needed.

Is it safe to assume that the rip knob will be anodized to match the cone?

the123
09-22-2004, 12:59 PM
an aluminum tab is the ticket. Shocktech tolerances are pretty sketchy. If that cone is an off size, it will mean more jams inside the Halo. I'd love to see AGD make one.

Yup.

Mine should be in soon, I'll give a review on it as soon as it comes in.

we can always count on fragtek to go buy the new stuff

tony3 - dont get your panties in a bunch. my $200 statement was saying basicaly if i was to buy all that stuff ie rip drive, alum parts, halo, vic board etc + shipping and whatnot it would be around a $200 hopper more than I am willing to spend. i have a stock halo23 bps or w/e board works fine for me and i see no reason to upgrade. I agree with most people thoguh that we need some NEW shell materials this is getting rediculous.

i dont recall ever breaking PRE BE revvy shells

--edit we could argue all day and night about what is need and what isnt

I like buying the cutting edge crap just to see if it's worth it. And trust me, I'll give an unbiased opinion of it once I get a chance to thoroughly test it in an intense day of play.

The preview review will consist of an initial quality report, some photo's, weight of the product.

The final review will more than likely be posted after using it at the AO Mid-Atlantic day.

Aluminum shells would cook your paint.

Possibly, but how long do you keep paint in your hopper?

And for never breaking another freaking HALO shell again (tonite I need to replace mine for paintball on Fri night), I could live with losing 150 paintballs every now and then cause I forgot to take them out.

Cool. I'd like to see a good review. If possible can you attempt to determine if it has any effect on speed or battery life?

Aren't the shells already made out of Lexan (same material as those unbreakable nalgene bottles)? If so, I dont think a material change is in order, but rather a design change. Nalgene bottles owe a good amout of their strength and unbreakability to their cylindrical shape.... Perhaps redesigning the shape of the halo shells would be a better solution?

My cone and knob came in today (pix in first post). I am very pleased with the crafstmanship, they both look very nice. They also managed to keep the cone weight to a minimum.

Cant wait to get them in/on my Halo and see how they work!

only 200$? Just think off all those people that purchased the original HALO then had to upgrade to software version gazillion each time it was released and then the rip-a-ma-jig to correct even more problems.

Ya know what would have been nice? Free software upgrades to correct our programming problems....yea...now that is a way to stand behind a product. ;)

ok, sorry about the hijack. Thanks to MD/ST for the new drive cone. A great idea guys !

well....it is just a drive cone that will not break so everything I have heard has been really good......well...other than odyssey voiding your warranty if you are using it. It appears paintball companies get really pissed when you "fix" their products....LOL

They always updated my software for free, and always fixed my shells when they broke. Never made me pay shipping for anything either.
