205 mph earns biker citation

Speeding ticket may be Minnesota record

BY HANK SHAW

Pioneer Press

Al Loney couldn't believe his stopwatch.

The Minnesota State Patrol pilot had been flying near Wabasha on Saturday afternoon, watching a pair of motorcycles racing each other along U.S. 61. When one of the bikes accelerated dramatically, Loney was ready — clicking his stopwatch when the cycle reached a white marker painted on the roadside.

A quarter-mile later, he clicked it again. It read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be an astonishing 205 mph.

"I was in total disbelief," Loney said. "I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast."

The bike was moving nearly twice as fast as Loney's airplane. After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license — and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

Several law enforcement sources said Tilley might have set the record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history.

No comprehensive records are kept, but a search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley, the son of a Washington County sheriff's deputy, did not return calls to his home Monday.

Few vehicles can reach speeds in excess of 200 mph. Only a handful of cars, such as the Dodge Viper, the Porsche Carrera and several Lamborghinis, can hit the 200 mark. But many of the so-called "crotch rocket" motorcycles popular with young men can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can top 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

State trooper Steve Stromback, one of the officers who arrested Tilley, said the biker was taking part in the semi-annual Flood Run, a motorcycle rally that started in Hudson, Wis. The ride, in which thousands of bikers participate, raised money for the Gillette Children's hospital this year.

Stromback said most of the participants obey the law, but added that police cited another eight bikers for driving more than 100 mph last weekend. Speed demons show up every year, Stromback said, which is why the State Patrol had aircraft and extra troopers in the area.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death riding at such a velocity.

"I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour," Swanson said. "But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure."

That's awesome :) Maybe I should go out and set my local highest speeding ticket record of all time today ;) (That's if I had something that could go 200+mph).

Hate to ruin your good fun but I live in Minnesota and yesterday the guy called into a local radio show. He really wasn't doing 205 and his bike even with mods can't go that fast. In the story they clocked him using a stopwatch, which is not very acturate. I have to admit this story is very instresting, but there was no way he was going 205

Still 160+ is a long was from 205. I also thought it was fun that he didn't even have a motorcycle license

cphilip
09-22-2004, 02:19 PM
... and he will prove what if he is able to disprove the speed down to like 160? Not going to disprove wreckless driving.... not going to prove he is anything but an idiot for going 160 + even so without a license.... and he is going to prove nothing even if he does?

If it was me I would want to keep it at 205!!!!! :D Not much to gain by going down to 160. Still gonna be the same charge.

Is it just me, or did the fine only come out to $215. THAT'S IT! A speeding ticket in San Antonio for going 10 miles over the speed limit is $175 (65 in a 55). So for an extra 140 MPH only costs him $40 more. That's messed up.

cphilip
09-22-2004, 02:45 PM
It comes out to $330. $215 for the wreckless Driving and $115 for no motorcycle endorsement on his license.

Wreckless driving is normaly (or can be cited at least) anything over 25 mph over the posted speed limit (state by state thing). No matter how much over. It carries the same weight for anything over that magic number. So its no worse to do 160 than it is 205. But sometimes the officer can make a judgement and not cite you for that if its close to the limit. Like for instance your doing 30 mph over only. He might site you for Speeding in excess of 10 MPH over the limit in that case and not wreckless driving. Judgment call on a close to thing. Not possible to do so for something that grosly in excess. Not even at 100 MPH would he do it.

Das right! You go to jail for dat one. The other one is a traffic violation. This ones a serious offense. Driving without regaurd for others safety.

At this point, I'd be arguing with the judge that I was going 220, not 205...and that "Awesomeness points" can be used to deduct jail time.

2 things do not make sense to me
1-a honda bike going over 200, or anywhere near it
2-if the bike was going 2 tiems faster than the place, how was officer barbrady able to click his little stopwatch accurately?

i know he wasnt going 205 as stated above, that is a given. but i would def want to keep it at 205 instaed of 160. you are screwed either way, so go for the glory

a couple of friends and i clocked one of my friends going 156 mph on a back road and we got it on video.

I dunno, doing 200mph would not be all that hard on most sports bikes. I mean hell I have done 140 on an old KZ650. Getting another 60mph out of a new bike would not be that hard.

As for how the plane could clock him, it's all about distance and angles. Also, when clocking with a stop watch over 1/4 mile, it's pretty accurate. You are going to be within 10mph.

i had a 5 month license suspension,
650$ ticket
300$ license reinstatemnet fee ( after the 5 months was over)
90$ eight hour class on a saturday ( criminal drivers ed)

that was after 2 apearences before the registrar and some other officials, and i just got a letter in the mail saying i have a court date to apeal my ticket. A OVER A FREAKING YEAR AFTER I PAYED THE TICKET you cant tell me the RMV are morons.

back to the story about the bike

areo dynamics wise. i think he would have actualy lifted off the ground before he reached 200

I had a friend clocked at 190MPH in a 55 on a race bike (he raced professionally)

Cop was waiting in his driveway when he came home - bike was not street legal (no lights), and was nto insured, was not licensed etc. Cop ended up not showing up in court and he won the disptue of the ticket. Wow

As everyone already said. No way he was going 205. 160-175 ...maybe.

I only wished I lived in Minnesota. My 90 in a 55 got me handcuffed, searched, vehicle search and straight to court. $450 later and about 2 hours I was back to my car which was left on the side of the road. New York is the vampire state. It'll bleed you dry!!

Sounds pretty damn stupid to me.

Moral of the story: If you're going to speed, go as fast as you can....

To think that in some European jurisdictions you can have you licence revoked for doing 30kph over the limit.

Ok, all of you people saying it couldn't have gone that fast, do you actually know anything about bikes. A 1000cc sport bike is going to hit at least 170-180 stock. The Suzuki Hayabusa tops at 189 I believe (electronically limited). Before they limited them, they topped at over 190. Stock. Throw an exhaust system, and performance intake, slightly smaller rear sprocket and over 200 would not be hard at all. Think, these bikes only weigh maybe 500-600 bs with a rider, and their putting out over 150 hp. Hard to get that good of a power to weight ratio out of a car.

I dunno about that. 1000 cc production bike? I don't think so. Maybe 160 - 180 with some bolt on mods. In fact the fastest record I can find of a production 1000cc bike is 182. Push rod. Not much faster in the non push rods but a tad. Not until you get to the higly modifieds from the internals out do you start seeing 200 plus. And this guy had a production bike it seems. He could have done some stuff. But if he hit that speed he is a new record holder for a production bike NO MATTER what mods he did to it. But still I doubt he did hit that speed. Here are the records of Stock 1000cc bikes. And even they are a bit modified.

Hasn't what?

I don' think anyone is claiming 200 can't be hit. But most of us seriously doubt a 1000 cc fairly much stock bike can do it... Even many real professionals modify them and try and try... and do not succeed. A bigger bike motor and yea... its done. And done repeatedly. I think people are just doubting THIS guys bike could have done it. And probably that is the case. Unless we hear later he strapped a Jato on to it.... ;)
