View Full Version : So what misconceptions do you have

Was talking to a guy the other day from somewhere in the south.
He had alot of misconceptions about Montana before he came up here. So I got to wondering which ones I had about other places were totally bogus. What better place to ask.

So I ask.

Michigan- Is it half snow half industrial complex?
California/Arizona- Is it really that hot? Is Cali really that full of liberal wacko's?
Texas - Do you guys have tree's or is it mostly flat scrub land?
Is the south really that humid?
People in the east can you really not see alot of stars at night?

In case you are wondering
No MT is not full of snow but it does get butt cold(I've seen up to 40 below)
We don't ride horses everywhere
We are pretty full of right wing wacko's.

Anything else you guys would like to add or ask about other areas of the country?

California/Arizona- Is it really that hot? Is Cali really that full of liberal wacko's?

Not the ones I hang out with. It really depends on where you live. Nor Cal is out of control wacko. Berkely wouldn't let their city fire engines fly the flag after 9/11 because they thought it was pro-war.

Temperature. Same thing. Depends on where you are. Southeast CA gets dang hot. 120+

So, what part of MT you from? My family is from Missoula, Stevensville, Helena and other parts. Was up there last summer for a family reunion.

Texas... it is said if you don't like what you are seeing go 100 miles in any direction and it will change. For the most part, very true.

Depends on which part of the state. I'd say yes and no to that one. One of the most interesting things to watch is the change in landscape as you drive across texas. Thats what makes the trip bearable.

I can see staws probably not as clear as people in other places, on clear nights though yes I can see stars

I've always wondered how the south teaches the civil war and what they call it. My history teacher says they teach it differantly.

yes, i can see stars, depending on the night, some nights there are no clouds, but no stars either... its all about light pollution i guess. we drink coffee milk here, from what i hear, not many people know about coffee milk (like chocolate milk and strawberry milk, but coffee).... but its extremely usual around here

I am from Billings, never been to Helena or Stevensville, but I have been to Missoula once.

acecl22- I have never even heard of coffee milk.
The closest thing to that I can think of is those Starbucks frappacino things that are sold in convienience stores.

Having traveled a lot around the US I can say, alot of the stereo-typing you hear about different states and regions started for a reason. So I think in some cases it really is true.

Yes, the south for the most part is damn humid. Yes if you live near a big city, you can not see many stars (this is not just the east, but any place). Yes, CA is full of crazies and yes, Choco Milk does come from the brown cows.

No, it's not. But that also depends on where you are I think. If your in the UP (upper penninsula [sp?]) then there isn't anything at all up there, but once you get into about November it will start snowing. In the lower penninsula it doesn't snow until later. The only places where it is really industrial is around Detroit and some places within about 1 hour drive from Detroit. I live in Ann Arbor and there isn't really anything industrial here that I can think of.

Texas - Do you guys have tree's or is it mostly flat scrub land?

Having traveled Texas almost in its entirety this summer, I can tell you it has everything. Texas is a place diverse natural and cultural beauty. Thick timber around Nacadoces and Huntsville in the east, rolling hills between San Antonio and Austin, great and spacious plains from San Angelo to Amarillo, with mountains east of El Paso.
In the west, from El Paso east to San Angelo and north to Amarillo, its all scrub. Once you get east of San Angelo and Wichita Falls, the plains give way to gentle hills, and the mesquite and scrub give way to pecan and oak trees. East of Austin, the hills start leveling out, but the trees start getting thicker, and it starts getting more humid. You have great piney woods as you get closer to the eastern border with Louisiana, and deciduous forests in the outlying areas around the Dallas/Fort Worth Metropolis. Its alot of space, and a great range of scenery that you need a lot of time to truely appreciate. And you ask about stars in the East. I'll tell you that among the best places to see stars in the continental US, is in the mountains near Ft Davis, Texas. Its mind-blowing how much you can see on a clear, moonless, West Texas night. No words can describe it.

Yeah that is a big ole stereotype, and if you base your view of the South on Family guy then, well, that's only half right ;).

Not really though. We learn the Civil War just like any other, and MOST of us think slavery was wrong. There are racists everywhere, but there happen to be a small bit more down here than elsewhere. I'm talking like maybe 5% more or something, it's not like half of everyone you see is a racist. But yeah, your history teacher is a moron. We all call it the Civil War, are glad the North won, etc. All the people with the confederate flags don't like slavery, it's sorta like Mag people really like mags even if they know they perform as good as others. Sorta like the cocker debate, some like mags even though they are about the same. It's a pride thing, kinda a sub-patriotism thing. Of course then theres those "south will rise again" people, givin' us hicks a bad name... :D

Yes, and they really do suck at road work. You can close your eyes going north from Indiana into Michigan and instantly tell when you hit the state line.

Yes, Indiana really does have lots and lots of corn, and lots of paintgun companies. Well....3....

Humid..? I cant really tell if its humid or not, its humid in the summer occasionly, but ive never been to ANY place and noticed a difference. So i unno on that.. but then again im only in North Carolina.

Well, yes and no, my hometown is a civil war battlefield so all we ever really learned about in history class growing up was about the Civil War. I never learned about any part of american history past WW2 till I took a world history class in highschool. The majority of the time was spent learning about the civil war. My yankee friends say that in the north they teach the war's main cause as a "fight against slavery", I can say that for the most part I was taught that the war's main cause was a "fight for states' rights". Of course those reasons are both far to simplistic, but you can see how perspectives change depending on were you are taught.

I've always liked english people that I've met, for the most part they've been very witty and like to drink.

well for the most part konig your right the majority of my class thinks civil war was just slaveyr. Althought I think that is just kids being ignorant. My history teacher also taught us other reasons the war happened, but I can't remember now.

I very rarely hear anything local about them here.

I've grown up in Tennessee, and lived in Georgia the past five years, and I've never once seen actual KKK members or known anyone who was one. Now I've only lived in one small part of either one of those states so I could'nt say that there are no KKK in them, but I've never seen a trace of them.

I've only ever seen the KKK on TV shows or in history books. From my understanding, they've about dried up their membership completely, maybe only 2000-3000 'actual' members. I read that they had fallen so far down that they have to merge forces with more "popular" hate groups like skinheads.

I have met plenty of trashy, racist rednecks though, but I suspect they have a "yankee equivelent" in the north as well, minus the rebel flags of course. I have also encountered a surprising number of "rednecks" from Ohio, complete with rebel flags, wich is a mystery to me

I propose dividing MI into two states - one being the money draining Detroit :) and the other being West MI - the rest of you can go whichever way you want, we'll keep the UP.

West MI is awesome... you get the lake, fresh water, seasons. Mind you the seasons are winter and road construction, but still. And you have more casinos than any other state except Nevada. You also have some of the highest paid teachers in the nation, and they tend to be good at least around where I live. We define summer as three months of bad snow skiing.

I try to avoid Detroit :D

Supposedly there was a yearly KKK rally about 10 miles from my house in a small community called Greenwood. I've never actually seen the rally, but almost anyone you talk to around this area knows where it was held. I've heard its really pathetic (which goes without saying) and small. From what people say its more of a white trash party, not a big event with media exposure ect. So all this to say, I guess the KKK isn't really that visible around here and I live as far south in Alabama as you can go :)
