This was my grandfathers very old rifle. It has no marking at all. We were trying to figure out what it is. Anyone have any idea?

i think i see the japaneses imperial cersamthemum ( i know i cant spell) and you get a better pic of the marking near the breach

it might be a early model arisaka rifle. the plum shaped bolt handle look fimiliar

If the crysanthimum is there then it's japanese 'cause that is the imperial symbol. the straight bolt is also characteristic of a japanese rifle.

EDIT: no marking at all, well is that a scratched out figure above the breach. It could be a captured rifle just after the war when the crysanthimum was required to be removed via american orders.

It's either a japanese Arisaka Model 99(7.7mm) or Model 97(6.5mm) rifle.

The crude finish might indicate a rifle of late war manufacture. The integral, and quite useless, monopod attached to the rifle is a dead give away. Heres a link to a site about the Arisaka Model 99

Dammit, you guys nailed it!!! Konig is right; the monopod is a giveaway. As well as the action. Japan used the wierd looking action, which actually threw off your aim while reloading. These rifles werent very well manufactured...but, a good find overall.
