Problem: I'm getting power to the mobo (although cpu fan is not powering up), however no power to anything else. Like I said, the power supply is brand new, so I'd hate to think newegg shafted me, so I ask y'all. Am I missing something here?

New mobo/processor (Gigabyte GA-K8NS/Athlon 64 3000).
New Power supply, coolmax 450w.
Clean hard drives, freshly reformatted, nothing on them.

How do you know the mobo is getting power? Does it try to boot or something?

Sounds like mabey a bad 12v rail on that PSU. Try a different PSU if you have any around.

Edit: I know my mobo(Asus K8V SE Deluxe) takes 2 connectors, the 20-Pin ATX connector and a seperate 12v conector on a completley different spot. Make sure that's plugged in if you have one.

I assume that you have already removed the power cables and refitted them? The processor fan not working is something you need to fix now and worry about the other stuff later since the chip is probably more expensive than your harddrives.
What other stuff do you have in this case, I have swapped power leads around to wire up things and in "stealing" the power from one of the cables I lost one of the items in the chain.

Wickedklown.......good call the M/B does need the 12v connection attached as well as the regular atx connector.

I also notice that you are limited with graphics cards with this mother board.

I had the same prob with a MSI K8T with a Fortron 530w PSU.......te PSU was incompatible wih the mobo..........that might be your problem also.

go to xtremesystems.org/forums and ask about that mobo and PSU probs.....see if there are any.

I know the mobo's getting power because: 1. There are a couple led's that light-up when the powers on(not the cat5/net cable) 2. They go on/off as I turn the system power on/off.

Yes, the 12V is plugged in.

I've got a 450w PSU, there's no reason I should be running short.

Other stuff in case: 100gig Maxtor, 20gig maxtor.
NEC 16xDVD/R, Verbatim 48X CD/R

Currently, the CD & DVD are unplugged, leaving only the harddrives, which aren't even firing up as well.

So, anything else? I'm most likely goin to grab another PSU tomorrow just to try that out.

*edit* PSU is a Coolmax CR450B, and it says it supports both P4's & Athlons (doesn't specify XP/Sempron/64).

*edit again* Checked the website, and it does support Athlon 64's.

It could be your PSU blew. It happened to me the day after I got my new rig built. The mobo was getting power, but not enough to boot, and the fans' LEDs would turn on for a second then power down. I wound up just RMA'ing it and purchasing one locally.
It could also be that the PSU doensn't have enough amps on the 12v rail. I checked on NewEgg, and the highest amps on the 12v rail on any CoolMax PSU was 22, and if you have a high-end video card, that could be the problem.

Try running the PSU without anything connected, including the mobo (ground the green wire on the ATX connector to a black wire also on the connector)
If you don't hear the fans spin up, then the PSU is blown, and you should definitely RMA it.

My video card is a Radeon 9600, which I presume isn't going to suck up that much power...

are you POSITIVE that your soft-power switch is hooked up properly and working correctly?

sure?

check again.

go ahead, humor me.

Just because it's compatible with Athlon 64's dosn't mean that it dosn't have issues witht hat specific motherboard. Or it could just be a bad PSU. Buy/borrow a different one and see what happens.

Brian, absolutely positive. I checked it several times.

Wicked, I'm checking for issues with that PSU/mobo now. Tried a cheapo 350w PSU yesterday, did the exact same thing (came with a case a friend bought).

UGGGGGG  :cuss:

Darken, or anyone else for that matter, how many amps do you recommend on that 12V? Any PSU's inparticular?

I'd say anything 25A+ would be adequate. If you have the money, you should consider an OCZ PowerStream (http://xoxide.com/powerstream.html) or an Antec NeoPower (http://xoxide.com/antec-neopower-480.html).
If expensive isn't your bag, either a Fortron 500w (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-934&depa=0) or Fortron 400w (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-935&depa=0) would do nicely.
Edit: Forgot to mention the Ultra X-Connect (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ULT31556&sourceid=qIqsQeWWgav4AnbPRq4V) :ninja:. It may not be ATX12v v2.0, but its still a really nice PSU.

Just tried a brandnew Antec 400w PSU, still same bag..is bad RAM a possibility?

I coulda sworn I just posted this, so chances are I posted in the wrong thread, hehe.

Anyway, if the Ram was bad, it would still Post. I'm starting to think it might be a dead mobo...

Update..

I pulled the video card and she booted up, granted with no display. I was flipping through the mobo manual and it says it does not support AGP@x(3.3V). However hte card I have is a Radeon 9600 (8x/4x)..

It's a start, now what?

could just be a dead video card. Try it in a different computer.

I told you that with my first post ...above ;) That was why I said good call to WickedKlown...as I downloaded the manual to look through to check about any special power needs.

The manuals are normally your friend just ploughing forward results in stuff like this....the warning about the graphics cards is right at the beginning.

Since it all boots up now read the specs you need and go buy the graphics card.

I must have missed that little tidbit :D

Thing is, the card is 8x/4x, it *should* work. Ah well, sorry for all the trouble guys, and thanks for the help!

Now I'm in the market for a new video card..I hear the Geforce 6600's are sweet, but damnit, I hate moving away from ATI..suggestions? :bounce:

So I'm now hellbent on one of the BFG 6600GT OC's..Yum :D

Regardless of that, we have a new problem system wise..

Took me several tries to get XP Installed (related to using an OEM disk perhaps??). Finally get it installed, and it reboots like normal. However, I can't get to windows. After the initial windows loading screen the damned thing reboots every single time. I've tried safe mode to no avail.

So, what gives now?

*edit* I have 1gig (2x512mb) of Kingston's 400mhz ValueRam..not the best option, I know

I was looking to buy that card but my board only supports AGP 2x...which is 3.3v. Thats your problem. If the card is 8x and 4x only it wont work on that board.

The best i could find for this board is the ATI All in Wonder 128MB. Waiting for it now. TV! YAY! ;)

Actually Tuna, that's not/wasn't my problem..It was just a bad card. My mobo supports 8x AGP, so we're good to go ;)
