Going through the CMP, you should be able to get a Springfield Armory Service Grade for $500. Not a bad deal:

http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm#Service

Danish and Greek issue a bit cheaper.

I've been quite pleased with my CMP Winchester Garand (c1943) and my father's Springfield Garand (c1942).

If you like compact firepower, you might investigate one of these (HK51B):

The most fun I have had with a pistol was my IPSC 9x21 - capacity was around 22 rds, had a 40mm red dot sight. About as practical as the .44 mag.

I defer to Steelrat when it comes to the actual need for a pistol, mine are just for fun.

Taurus Total Titainium 627
(http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=627SH4C&category=Revolver)

The only major parts on this gun that aren't Titainium are the barrel and cylinder sleeves, hammer, trigger, and extraction assembly. Guess how much it weighs unloaded. Come on, guess. Okay...19 oz. Yeah. 7 shots of .357 is enough to discourage pretty much anything.

I just started getting into shooting a few years ago. A lot of my friends have huge gun collections. Here is what we've got. The top is a 12guage shotgun from sears. It's old, my dad got it as a wedding present like 22 years ago. The second is a Ruger 308, and the bottom is my Ruger 10/22 that I just got for christmas. It's some 40th anniversary edition. I'm planning on getting a 22 pistol sometime. I just like plinking around the house and the 22 ammo is all that I can afford.

IMO, the gun desing is a little light for the .50 round. Also, with the heavier ammo, it's unbalanced (like I said, it was designed for the .44 round), and nothing sucks harder than an unbalanced weapon. Thirdly, the platform is the perfect size for .44, but it is too big (Again, IMO) for .357, the other round it is offered in.

Anyhoo, yeah, but to each his own.

Its not a very good gun. However, Hollywood has some sort of strange fascination with them. Rounds that large arent really practical except for "gee-whiz" shooting fun, and even then I think that a revolver might be a better platform for them.

EDIT: They are also good for whacking bears and such, but if I was going up against something like that, I'll take the reliability of a revolver anyday.

Steelrat
02-01-2005, 02:12 AM
Hey, Steelrat, you said on AO day, Glock have extraction issues? Could you elaborate please. Was hand loaded ammo a factor?

Glocks have two known extraction issues.

The first involves the ejector. There is a piece of metal in the ejector mechanism that is prone to bending and deformation.

The second involves double feeds. A double feed is when a round is fired, the case fails to extract from the breech for whatever reason, and a new round is rammed in behind the empty case. When you run a double feed drill in other guns, you put a spent case in the breech, slide a fresh one in behind it, and do the tap-rack-lock-rip-work-tap-rack-fire drill. However, if you shoot a glock, you have to use a plastic dummy round instead of a spent case. The reason? The spent case will become horribly jammed in the breech if you try the drill, and you actually need to shove a rod down the barrel to get it out. Now, if you are a police officer in the field, and you have a double feed, guess what is sitting in your breech? A spent case. Not good.

Don't get me wrong though, glocks are fine weapons. I just think that you need to know its shortcomings.

The Desert Eagle was indeed first offered in .357 magnum.

That Win. M75 was a wrecked, beat to poop, sad affair of a rifle when I got it in trade. After I removed a LOT of damage, I had a smith do some magic on it. I set it up originally for Sarah, to fit her when she was younger. However, it still fits her fine, and most others too.

Well under an inch at 50 yards is quite common with most any ammo.

The Garand clips are rather easy and quick to load, and since they are double stack, they're rather compact. You don't have to worry about ejecting them (that's the best part).
