I've got too much stuff on my workbench, so heres a question...

winner will recieve something automag related.

where do the oblique shock waves converge to on a ramjet?

let the games begin :)

Why dont you just kick me in the face, it would be less painful

they converge in the inlet :cheers:

I believe that Pennzman54 is correct, they converg in the inlet duct (Supersonic or variable geometry).

at the fuel injectors/combustion area. having convergence promotes the compression of inlet air - if they converge in front of or behind the injectors, the engine just doesn't work.

edit: oops, I think that's a scramjet, not a ramjet. I can't remember how ramjets work.

are we talking car motors or turbine/aircraft engines?? car moter=intake runner right above the carb that feeds straight into the aircleaner.. aircraft right after the turbine just before the fuel is added tot he mixture.. obviously im guessing on the last one!

hmmm. Shatter-Storm you may be correct. If I remember correctly the flame holders located in the combustion chamber provide blockage to slow down the airflow (to mix and ignite the fuel and air.) I remember the inlet duct being a key factor, but you may be right about where the waves converge. It's been a long time since I thought about powerplant design. Must have a lot of Aerospace engineers around here.

Everybody knows that oblique shockwaves are produced when supersonic flow passes over a wedge, in a ramjet the wave converges at the supersonic diffuser cone and in scramjets the oblique shockwave converges at the nose of the vehicle. "A ramjet cannot work without a shockwave. The flow in the combustion chamber must be subsonic. Remember what happens to total temperature as it passes through a shock: It remains the same. Also note, that by slowing the flow down you convert most of that to local temperature. If you had a ramjet engine in a Mach 6 flow, the temperature inside the combustion chamber would be over 2000°C! Not only is that temperature hot enough to damage the internal components of the engine, but there is very little energy which you could get by burning the jet fuel."

I'm looking for a term that describes the location... to be more spacific :D

either way I'll check with my source to see if any of your answeres are correct (or close enough)...

pennzman543 you are the winner.

"inlet" is technically correct, I was looking for the "cowl lip" which is a part of the inlet but your answer is very close...

now what do I give you.. lemme go look....

The Ramjet Is Like A Supercharger. Housed Over The Intake Manifold. They Converge In The Intake/carbeurator.

Ummm sorry dude not a car question... A ram jet is a type of a jet aircraft engine... I think your thinking of Ram Air... which is just a scoop.
