Hey all, I recently had some time to play around with my Uncle's mixing board, gearf, etc, and i recorded, layered, tracked, etc, some stuff I've been working on.
Lemme know what you think.
Most of the Mixing equipment was Beringer, I believe, and I'm using a Jackson DKMG, through a BOSS MT-2 right into the board.
Keep in mind I havent been palying very long, and it was my first time using Recording equipment.

It has some serious potential. The distortion sounds like butt though. The bass sounds too...machined i guess, its just sounds too clean. But thats all good for just a rough demo recording.

The first track kinda reminds me of a Black Dahlia Murder song, but without the blast beat and the intense vox.

Anyways, pretty cool stuff, im just not diggin the distortion, but its all good.

Distortion isn't my style, personally, but it sure as hell doesn't sound like butt.

Bass... he isn't a bass player, and he layed down the bass track just to add to the sound.

The point his, his guitar skills > life.

Cletus... don't let your redneck genius overwhelm your common sense. :D

That's some great stuff! Has the melody of early Maiden... but a tad darker. It's great. Keep up the great work! :headbang:

Not bad. I'm not much of a music buff, but I liked the new material, and I really like the guitar solo's. Has a lot of potential I would say.

Digging the guitar skill...I'm with squid on this tho...a bit too much distortion for my tastes :headbang:

Not bad, nice 80's metal. I can dig that. ;)

Also not a fan of the way the guitar tone came out, maybe better live but pretty rough in the playback.

Only real critique I would have is to not try and play faster than you ability, give it time..it will come. :)

Clean and Tight > Fast and Sloppy.

Good effort tho, I liked it.

BTW, I have that same strap. :ninja:

One question before I comment. Do you want the producer side of me to come out or the sound engineer side? I could do both sides, but that might take some time.

You can do whichever you like. This was jsut some experimenting I did with the Mixing stuff.

I didn't like the distortion at first, but I grew used to it. I love the riff at 1:06 in the first song. Keep up the good work man, it sounds sweet, those Jacksons can throw out awesome distorted tones.

dont repeat so much it becomes boring and stuff if you do. yes its a meloidy but there needs too be more parts that move around in different directions. oh ya add solos

Add Solos? Why do songs need solos?
Did you listen to the second one?

ya just got done with the second the solo was cool. Why do you need solos? Because everything gets boring with out something just standing out and blasting than just lissening to the same thing over and over and over and over and over get what i mean?

oh ya dont think i hate it infact its awsome but just needs a little up lift i love the low raunchy sounds

Not bad. Do you race any thing or do you just have the fox hat for the fun of it?

Muzikman puts on his "Sound Engineer" hat. (which by the way goes on backwards)

It sound like you had the guitar direct connected to the board and hot miced via an amp. If this is the case;

-Plug into the amp
-Place the mic infront of one speakers and point it at roughly a 45º angel. (You do not want to point mics directly at the cone.)
-You want to use a mic in the 30Hz to 15kHz range. This usually does not include voacl mics. An SM57 is a great for micing cabs.
-Adjust your amp for normal playing conditions. (so the volume is normal and it sound good to your ear.)
-If you have a stereo amp, you will want to use 2 mics (on on each channel)
-Now have someone sit behind the board while you play. Have them adjust the gain, volume and levels (high, mid, lows) until it sound about the same as it does coming out of the amp.
-Record a short riff (about 30 second) and then go and listen to the play back yourself. Listen to make sure everything is adjusted about where you want it. Some changes can be made at mix down, but it is best to get the tracks as clean as you can from the beginning.
-If you are trying to do this by yourself, good luck, it can be done, but it's not easy.
-When playing the second track, wear a good pair of headphones. Sealed cups are best. You will hear yourself playing along with the previous track, but don't worry if it does not sound good. What you hear in the headphones is not usually what the tape is hearing.
-When you are done laying all the tracks down and you are ready for the mix-down. Be sure to use monitor speakers and not headphones. This makes a big difference.

If you ever decide to record a full band and plan on doing it by tracks (and not live) this is the order in which things should be layed down.

Drums
Bass
Rhythm Guitar
Lead Guitar
Vocals

If you plan on recodging live, besure to surround the drum kit and amps with partitions (carboard with blankets over them will work). This is to prevent bleed from one instrument into the mics of the others. If this happens you end up with a real pain in the butt during mix-down. Also, it's best to put the singer in another room. Even the console room is good.

Muzikman puts on his "Producer" hat. (which by the way goes on the normal way.)

Play with the distortion more. It does not sound good at all.

When writing music, start with the rhythm parts first and fill in with the lead. It really sounds like you wrote the leads and then filled in with the rhythm. Maybe it's becuase it seems to not be synced.

Structured wise, the music just does not mesh. Though you appear to be very talented guitarist, pick up a book on song writing. Not the lyrical part, but how music is put together. This is one thing most musicians do not understand. This includes alot of the big names you hear out there. Good song writers have the music in their head before it ever comes out of a guitar (or what ever instrument).

Listen to Fireblades advice.

I treated a buddy to a day of paintball on me.
At the end of the day, he gave it tme. He never took it off ever, and I consider it an awesome gift.
