I recently re-read Tom's Tech tip #1 about barrels. I did read it a long time ago but just decided to ask this now.

Which barrels for the Automag have an 8-10" effective length?

Remember, I'm asking for the effective length. (the length without ports).

Based on what I have 12" cp & powerlyte scepter barrels should fit the bill.

Any one piece barrels will usually have an 8-10" effective length. The new two piece by Lapco I believe is about 8" of control bore. Not too many (if any) two piece barrels have anywhere near that.

You will need to keep in mind that any barrel system that utilizes inserts to regulate barrel diameter has an effective barrel length pretty much only from the breach to the business end of the insert regardless of how long the tip is.

Also, any two step single barrel will only have an effective barrel length up to the end of the first step to where the bore widens out and the ball is no longer in contact with the barrel.

Scepter insert length - 6"
Evil Pipe back length - 6"
Lapco Snapshot back length - 7 1/2"

Would the effective barrel length on a 1-piece be up to the first vents? When the air is allowed to go elsewhere than just down the barrel?

Yep, your typical one piece single bore is all effective barrel length up until the ball is no longer contacting the barrel or where the air starts venting out behind the ball, typically your porting.

When I say two piece barrels, I also mean stepped barrels, not just barrel kits. This would include the SP AA, Dye Boomstick, etc. So me and Bob are pretty much in agreement.

Redz Pepperstick has 8 inch backs.

Agreed. To get anything truely over 8" you'd need to look at something like the Lapco Bigshot or any single bore one piece barrel.

Thanks Evil Bob - that explains a lot & confirms what I've been told in the past (and seen here on the forum). When I finally get my tac-one & am looking for barrels, I'll keep that in mind.

yea, the reds pepperstick barrel kit has an amazingly long effective length, it should fit the bill just right, but bore sizing isnt really necessary, so...

Not really...

My 8.5" Taso Eliminator has pinholes beginning from right after the nubbin and has a muzzle break.

Thanks for all the input. Glad to see that many of you are paying attention and not just going for the longeset barrel you can buy. I once saw a kid with a ridiculous 21" barrel. He said he was "sniping" and he could shoot farther. LOL, what a waste of air.

My barrels range from 8.0" to 12". I may have to get one more barrel like a Lapco to get exactly 8" effective length.

What do you think of the Lapco Bigshot? Would that fit the description perfectly?
