View Full Version : Which Video Format Do You Want?

Well I was messing around and annoyed that I cannot seem to get the compression I want for the movies I make. I would like to keep my nice big video sizes because.. well because I like seeing the details (unless you all really like 320x240 res videos...)

So I finally decided to try out a DivX format and it seems pretty nice. I took my old (and now rather infamous) 16?bps shooting of my RT and re-encoded it.

My original and currently uploaded one is about 7.5MB

Link to this 7.5MB movie (http://www.zakvetter.com/Videos/Z-mans%20Top%20Mech%20ROF.mov)

This DivX version is a mere 1.5MB and is the same resolution and length.

Link to this 1.5MB movie (http://www.zakvetter.com/Videos/Z-mans%20Top%20Mech%20ROFdivx.avi)

Clearly this is the better choice. I could take that 28MB Qloader video and crush it down to like 12MB. However...

Can most of you view this new video? Does it stream for you? does it work with QuickTime and/or your nasty Windows Media Player? I have got some yes's and no's on both sides. So I present it here for you all to rip apart. Which is the lesser of the 2 evils?

I fear that this new DivX formatt might require a DivX codec. I think these guys over here at www.divx.com (http://www.divx.com/divx/) can take care of that but it's still annoying to have to get a codec that works for you.

Note: To make a streaming .wmv formatt video on my Mac requires a $500 app (unless you know of a cheaper one) that I am sorry to say, I am too cheap to buy. Anyhow I put the choice up there to see how many of you choose it (or if you even read this ;) )

As long as you don't use .wmv, because Windows Media Player for Mac OS X doesnt really work...

Go with the DivX format. It works on Windows and Mac and the codec is free to download for playback. You probably won't get a better video compression out of the other options...

But then I'm biased due to employment :D

So, how do I download the codec and make it avaiable to windows media player?

My computer hates Quicktime movies from your site. And I only get sound for .avi files. But yea, what hitech said^.

You can download the codec here

Mac
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

On the Mac once you install the codec you can view the file via QuickTime. You'll need to restart quicktime if you have it open when you install the codec.

Windows
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

It will only play the sound if you don't have the codec installed. Basically it allows for very small file size with very high quality which you can't get with WMV or MOV files.

It will play in Windows Media as well as the DivX Player on the windows platform.

:D

I'm just someone that happens to work there, and play paintball. :D

I used to have a bunch of automags but converted over to Vikings in the last year. And then basically switched to scenario ball using my Custom Palmer and a Zeus.

If you have any vid questions let me know. I use Final Cut on my Mac to do most of my video work including paintball and motorcycles.

Def. use the DIVX. Don't care if it's streaming or not. The codec is a free download and only takes a min or less with cable. The compression and quality are well worth the few MB it takes up on your HD.

Hmmm, I've never seen that video before. one pull, one shot?

Now get them big vids up..lol ;)

Divx, definitely. I've been using it for quite some time (couple years now, I think) when downloading movies that should not be mentioned on AO. :D

In my (admittedly limited) experience, divx files are the easiest to get playing on Linux. I have to get non-free codecs for wmv and some quicktime stuff, but divx works out of the box. So, divx gets my vote.

Well that is good enough for me. I have already re-encoded the Qloader videos and the automag stress test videos and they are less than 1/2 the original size (currently up on the site). Figure by next week I will have every movie redone and a few new ones up that I never really released before.

Thanks for the help guys.
