Well, my brother's wedding is coming up in July and I wanted to do something cool for him (since I am the best man). I've been into woodworking for a while and am also a musician, so I thought a handmade guitar was a good idea. He has been playing for about five years, and has jokingly asked me to make him one for about two years. Here it is.....not completely done yet, but almost. I still need to seal, lacquer, polish and add some decorative stuff......The top and neck is made of honduran mohogany, and the back and sides are made of zebrawood.

Huh, did you come up with that, or get some dimensions and a tutorial on the internet(or comparable)

I did a lot of research on the internet on instrument making (which is known as luthier or something like that) and used one of my other guitars for dimensions.

Using a kit, or from scratch?

I thought about buying a kit from Carvin, and then putting in my own internals...maybe a Jackson sustainiac system..

EMG-81's....mmm....

Thats really cool! If you're a real artist you could do some extra wood burning for the finishing touches...

It's from scratch. I bought 81s for it, but ended up putting them in one of my other guitars. Now I've got to buy something else. hmm

Haha, Score!

Why not go with those EMG style pickups? I dont recall the names of them, but Caparison's use them standard. They're awesome little things.

The fretboard is a little bent up where it meets the body, but other than that, it works fine. I put on one string to see if it actually sounds like a guitar, and it does. I'll be lacquering it Monday and Tuesday, so I'll let you guys know how it plays on Wednesday.

Hope you researched your fret spacing!! Very important if you want every note to be in tune.

Yes, I did know enough about guitars before i started to know about fret spacing; however, I researched things like bracing and tone bar patterns, as well as nut and saddle info.

Running a little behind with the lacquer phase, but I should have finished pics up by next weeks end.

haha, very nice. I have never seen anyone home make a guitar from scratch before. Should be one great present.

thats pretty cool. Hopefully it sounds great. I really cant tell how big it is but it looks fairly large. The huge ones allways sound great. I play guitar, im learning but i can play msot stuff. Make sure you get like a high gloss finish on that thing, itll make it shine great!

I was actually thinking about making a drum. It would be really hard to get a perfect 360 degree bend in the wood though. As I said in the first post, the sides and back are zebrawood, and the top is honduran mohogany.

I've made drums before, being a drummer. However, I buy the shells online. All of the drilling, porting, stuff like that, I do myself. And using an auger on an acrylic shell to port is something I will never put myself through again.
