In the days before the King returned, there are older stories. Stories of the Firstborn and their struggle with the same things that have gripped Man and the rest of the Secondborn since they first awoke in the song of Iluvatar. This is just one of those stories, the Silmarillion.

The Silmarils were the light of the world, captured from the light of the two trees, Telperion and Laurelin, the trees of silver and gold. The trees in the end were destroyed by Melkor in an attempt to put Arda into darkness, but Feanor captured the light into three massive jewels, and called these the Silmarils. The Valar took the last flowers of each of the trees and made the Sun and the Moon, but the world never had the light as it did in the days of the Trees of Valar.

The Silmarils were locked into a vault in Feanor’s fortress at Formenos. But they were not safe, Melkor, escaping the chains of Bondage in stole into the vault and stole the three jewels and returned to his fortress in Middle-Earth called Angband. Forging an Iron Crown he set the three jewels in it and wore it about his head,

Feanor and his sons gathered and, they swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilúvatar, calling the Everlasting Dark upon them if they kept it not.

This would be the Oath that drove Feanor and his seven sons to make war on whoever had the Silmarils until they recovered them. They traveled to Middle-Earth and made war on the Dark Lord and his minions. Feanor was slain by Gothmog, the Lord of the Balrogs. His half-brother, Fingolfin, took the rank of High King of the Noldor, and for awhile, the Noldor built cities and lived in Middle-Earth building strength to again assault Melkor Morgoth and Angband. The Noldor fought many battles and for several centuries they held Angband in a Siege. But Melkor broke the siege in the Dagor Bragollach, The Battle of Sudden Flame and marched across the plains. Fingolfin in great anger rode through the battle to the door of Angband and demanded that Melkor meet him in single combat. Melkor did so and he slew Fingolfin with Grond, The Hammer of The Underworld.

And so his son, Fingon assumed the crown and the Oath. Other battles were fought to rid the world of Melkor, Glaumring the father of Dragons, Sauron Melkor’s second in command and Gothmog Lord of the Balrogs, but none were able to succeed. In fact the Noldor had started to war upon each other and Elf killed elf. This was due to the liberation of one of the Silmarils by Beren and Luthien by their sneaking into Melkor’s fortress. When the sons of Feanor heard this, they made war on their elvish brothers and destroyed elvish cities driven on by the Oath they had swore.

That Silmaril went back across the sea to the Valar and the undying lands and became the North Star.

And so Fingon has repaired the rift between the Houses and Maedhros, the eldest son of Feanor repented the Kinslaying that the sons of Feanor had done to regain the Silmaril. The Elves have founded the Union of Maedros and are marching for Angband to end the rule of Melkor and his servants and return with the Simarils to the Undying Lands. And fulfill the oath that they had sworn. This is that battle, this is the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, or Battle of Unumbered Tears.

Who will you choose to support?

Fingon, the High King of the Noldor and his union of men, dwarves and elves or Melkor Morgoth and his minions of orcs, trolls, balrogs and dragons? Only you will get to decide who wins in this battle in the First Age.
