I have wanted to polish my mag's body for awhile. I was viewing Doc's on how to properly polish one (link here (http://www.vm68.com/stuff/polishing_tips.html)) and noticed that I needed 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper. So set out to find the suggested supplies and after visting the local Lowes, Home Depot, and ACE hardware I can't find any.

Do any of you know where I can find 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper? I'd prefer to buy it locally if possible.

Thanks,

sorry, not trying to pick on the "guys hate asking" predicament, but did you ask them if they had it in stock? It just seems wierd that Home Depot wouldn't have a high grit sand paper

look at harbor freight if they are around. Also look at emery cloth scotchbright pads & steel wool. All very good for light sanding / polishing.

Auto parts stores usually carry up to 2000 grit wet/dry. I got mine at Advance auto. It's usually over by the touch up paint and body filler.

Thank you guys. I'll check at AutoZone and maybe call Harbor Freight and see if I can have them add it to my next order.

That is weird that those places don't have it. And 1000 should be fine enough. 1500 is overkill. Are you going to use a paste polish over it.

Ok, after polishing many mag bodies over the years, here is how ya do it.

use a wet/dry paper (this is found at autopart stores)

Start with 200 grit and get all the gray off
Change to 800 grip and get the deeper marks out
finish with a 1200 grit to make it almost mirror shine

Now, you have to remember, it's not chrome, it will not keep this shine, so you will have to polish some times.

Also, avoid the weld marks. You do not want to weaken them. You can take the finish off them, but don't hit them too hard.

Muzikman - Did you ever use a buffing wheel?

Not a problem if you use a sealer. I use "Bombs Away" I got for my Harley. Mothers or any other wax based polish will work well to keep the oxidation down.
