I'm planning on replacing my current twist-lock body with an ULE pretty soon, so I'll need a new barrel or two. I've always been pretty partial to J&J barrels but I'm wondering if there's some universally considered great barrel right now?

I don't really buy into the bore matching junk so I doubt I'll pick up one of those kits unless it was particularly cheap, but from looking at the prices of them, it may be cheaper to get than buying one back and a couple of fronts...

I'd like to have a 2 piece barrel unless its cheaper to buy two separate barrels, as I like to have a 10" and a 14" depending on field.. right now my favorite barrel is a 12" j&j ceramic but the vane side of me would like a black gloss barrel to match the ULE body.

So, what do you guys like? I liked the sound of the macdev kit but again, not sure I really want to buy an entire bore matching kit.

just be careful because like the minimag the ULE bodies have a about a 1.5 inch lip before the treads, so if a barral is to "fat" at the base it wont fit in the body.
ive got a pipe kit by evil. i picked it up for about 60 used w/ a 14in tip. im real happy with that. plus i think it looks good. i got a 12 in tip for it because the 14 made my make look like a porn star :wow:

Yeah, I would buy a bore matched kit if it was cheap, just because single new barrels are pretty expensive.

Do you ever use any backs other than the standard?

The Redz Pepper sticks are a nice barrel and feature an 8-inch control bore, which Tom will give you a thumbs up for :D

Four back, 2 fronts, a nice padded case and right now it comes with a FREE Envy pack for $170!

I'd seen those, but I either don't like the lengths or the colors - the DYE one would work but I have a DYE barrel right now and I don't really like it.

Thanks for the link tho!

Word, I'll check 'em out, didn't know Redz even made barrels. Sucks that they come with 14 & 16" tips only (looks like it from the site), I can't stand using a 14" tip on Speedball field :\ They do look nice otherwise, although a little pricey..

I don't really like the insert idea and I refuse to buy anything from SP..

I can understand the SP thing, but why backs and not inserts. Whats the difference?

i'm a fan of scepter barrels by powerlyte. They are coming out with a new 07 model soon i think, that should own.

I havent tried one myself, but lots of people say those carbon fiber barrels are nice, like the DW one. I'd like to try one.

Using an insert just seems more prone to problems to me.. with it getting warped and not quite fitting right or whatever.

I'm sure they are fine, it's just not really that appealing to me (like I said I don't really buy into the bore matching thing anyway) and I hate SP.

I have my eye on one of those Pepper Stickz though.. not sure I'd go for the $170 kit but I could live with one of the 14" ones.

I agree with hating SP, however they have some of the best(for your money) barrels around. Just get something with inserts/backs and you'll be happy. Remember .691 in one barrel is the same as .691 in another

I think I like the look of the pepper stickz and I found the kit online for $109 which ain't bad really.

I can always pick up a separate 10" barrel for my shorter one.

I've got the redz pepperstick, and it looks great on my xmag and shoots great. The only thing i hate about it, is you get a 16" front you never use. I also have a Lapco bigshot barrel in 12" that i favor over the pepperstick, but it's one piece so no inserts or backs to go with it.

What kind of barrels do you use?

I've NEVER encountered a barrel too fat to fit into a ULE...

You using oldschool brass 3/4 barrels? I bet even those would fit...

That's what I don't like about the kit, 14" is long for me for a lot of games, it's probably the max I would use. 16" is completely useless and it doesn't look like Redz sells any tips shorter than 14" (I have no idea why.)

However, the barrels look nice and they sound like they are pretty good from the reviews.

I know you said you hate SP but you should really look into the DW Wisper barrel.

It's really nice and as long as you take care of the inserts they won't deform like you say.

and if you are lucky enough to find some stainless steel inserts you should not EVER have a problum with deformed inserts...

Yeah, I'm sure it is nice. I just really can't justify supporting Smart Parts by buying their inserts though.

I don’t like SP either but nonetheless they do make a good product.

I like my freak barrels (many)
I LOVE my Whisper barrel better. Awesome barrel.

EDIT (all SS inserts too)

But my next favorite after that...

.688 dye boomsticks. Don’t ask me why but my .688 SS boomstick shoots like none other, it comes out any time I have the right size paint. If you normally use a .689 on paint, try .688 WOW. It’s noticeable.

Paint to bore matching = Best thing in paintball since the Automag.

Bore kits are expensive for a reason. They are the best and they work.

I know how ya feel I hate them and almost everything they make, but the freak barrel I just can't deny is AWSOME!!!

and the wisper barrel is like an updated form, + unlike other CF barrels you can use battle swabs.

The only bad part about the wisper is it only comes in 14 and 16 inch lengths.... he disscontinued the 12" version for now...

Ultralites are the shizzy...dont let that other dye barrek turn you away..ul shoot like a dream..pricey but worth it..and u can pick one up used for like 50 instead of 100...matchsticks are also good barrels...bob long is realesing some new barrels soon.

But i love an UL...ive heard good things about peppersticks..and you dont have to buy a kit u can buy sperate barrels.

Yeah, I would probably end up doing that, I doubt I'd use the other backs and I wouldn't use the 16" tip.

If you don't want to bother with a kit like that you could look into the lapco barrels.

The miccro shot for smaller paint
the autosprite for medium paint
and the bigshot for larger paint

You could also look at the PPS Brass barrels. They are very nice and cost bout 50$ or so.

J&J makes a GREAT barrel for the money too.

Then just buy a J&J. you could also get the J&J Edge kit if you want to get the diffrent barrel tips and diffrent bore sized backs.

CP is what i use now, i used to have a jj ceramic kit, but found the kit to be useless as i was always using the .693 back. Personally, i use a 16" front, but they offer many fronts and you could get a back and 2 fronts for around $100 new. They shoot just about the same as a Dye UL barrel in my experience, but cost much less

I have a J&J kit that works out pretty well ( PM me for sale price if interested in buying )

Its 4 backs ( .685.688.691.693 ) a 10" and a 14" tip.

Black barrels in a hard sided padded case. The barrels are a kinda dull black initially ( teflon impregnated coating on these ), but with use they take on a nice gloss black shine.

The kit I have I had J&J custom make for me is a little different.. They have an Edge kit with 4" control bores that I dont like the looks of, and they were hard to get off my pump gun. I had them make the set of backs based on the Full Tilt series with 6 inch backs. they have worked out really well for me.

J&J kits are pretty cheap compared to most out there rigth now too.

Until I decided to part my ULE mag out, I was using a 14" UL on it (I slapped on a 12" tip when my wife used it). The DYE UL rocks.

The barrel that I have found that does the job best for me is the Dye Ti boomstick.

I run a dye ultralite back on my mag and a stiffi front
Alittle expensive, buck looks awesome, shoots good, and is super light, while still having interchangable backs...
