View Full Version : What is the Best Action Movie Ever

The punisher thread over on the Thorums got me thinking, so what is the best action movie ever? I'm talking Guns, cars, bullets flying, stuff blowing up and chicks hopefully getting naked. and how about lets not name some movie that only two people know about...no matter how good it is. Lets keep it somewhat mainstream huh? Also, i looked on IMDB at their list and agree that most of them are great movies and technically action, but I’m going to impose some restrictions: Must have guns in it (IE no period pieces, and yes i know Gladiator and Brave Heart were both sofaking awesome), and no action/adventure movies like Indiana Jones, Pirates OTC, and National Treasure, and don’t list Star wars movies either (laser guns don’t count). I have a couple categories below:

Best Recent: 4 Brothers
Best Classic: (10 years or older): Bullet
Best Ground Breaking (changed movie making): Matrix
Best Overall: (replaced T2) The Boondock Saints
Equilibrium would have won, but TBS had a boobie in it

I hesitate about T2 because I know there are better ones out there but this is the best I can think of right now since I’m not in front of my DVD collection. I also have yet to see many of the classics like Scar Face.

Worst: Ultra Violet

All good movies, but incorrect.

Best Action Movie Ever:
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/movie/coverv/08/137908.jpg

Commando

No movie can top its character development, story, awesomeness, or action.

It may very well be the best movie in history.

Army
11-09-2006, 01:12 AM
Band Of Brothers: Storyline not made up, no fiction involved or needed, much of the dialogue is true to the actual, no big name actor draw/star.

The filming technique puts you right there in the action, and the hell of combat is reproduced frightenly well.

I think maybe we should determine a definition for an Action Movie

Like:

1. A firearm/weapon/automobile must be used in an offensive manner a minimum of 5 (2 times for forms of transportation) times for each 15 minutes of film

2. No more than 20 consecutive minutes without offensive weapon use

3. No more than 10 consecutive minutes may be spent on "character development"

4. Any film featuring the following actors/actresses are not valid "action movies":

Meg Ryan, Julia Styles, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks (with the exception of S.P.R.), Alex Baldwin, Jerry Seinfeld, etc.

5. Any film featuring the following actors/actresses, in which a weapon is used a minimum of 3 times automatically qualifies:

Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, James Kahn, Steve McQueen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lungren, Van-Dam, John Wayne, Bruce Willis, Charles Brosnan, Steven Segal

The Killer.

EDIT: The Matrix borrowed TONS from The Killer as far as action sequences go. If you guys havn't seen it.....see it.

I would have agreed, but it didnt make the impact on movie making that The Matrix did and wasnt quite mainstreem enough to fit my deffinition. Plus i still have yet to finish seeing it....but in part i do agree since it deffinately influenced the matrix

In other Wakowski (sp?) Bros news: did you hear that one of them is getting sex change? What a shame, no chick, no matter if she was born a dude can possibly make a reputable action movie. good thing they were brothers huh? Now what the hell are we going to call them? The movie makers formerly known as the Wakowski Bros?

No i meant what I said...I also agree with the other poster who said he didnt like 4 Brothers, it was borderline retarded.

come on, when Statham drove his Audie up that ramp, flipped the car in mid air and just scraped the bottom of the car along the hook of a crane to knock the bomb off....i mean come on!!! And you think 4 Bros was bad?!Q?!?!??!?!?Q?Q??FDAKMFLKAJ?!?<EMLKFL:KJF?????????SK?asdf??????

And i said it was best recent (in the past two years) I would have put "Way of the Gun" but its just a little to old for best recent honors.

lord of war. i thought it was an excellent movie

that was not an action movie. While i know it technically qualifies under my above deffinitions, it in no way was an action movie. Hell, The Weather Man was more of an action movie than that steaming pile. At least in the weather man Cage was accousted by fast food.

V for Vendetta

very good movie, weak action, sorry but you know its true

I agree, Commando wins hands-down. I don't know how many people Arnold kills in that movie, because I can't count that high. I think the number that comes after infinity is "the amount of people killed in Commando".

Come on people, that scene where Arnold just runs around for 15 minutes with a belt-fed M60 and kills EVERYONE kicks the most rear of any movie in the history of movies. Plus, he kills someone with a saw blade. If it wasn't for that gay english dude in chainmail, the boners that this movie results in wouldn't feel so dirty.

Also, Conan comes in a close second. Come on, if I remember correctly, within a short period of time (like 10 minutes on-screen) he kills someone, has sex with a chick, and then punches out a horse.

Arnold is the king of action.

now heat was very cool, but a little to long to watch on a regular basis. I'm ashamed to admit it but i've only seen a few pieces of commando, so i can not judge. But i did just put it on my Q for blockbuster so i'll see it soon enough.

It's hard to pick a best. So I'm going to throw out some movies that haven't been mentioned, and may not be the best, but are some darn good movies that are the best of what I can think of right now.

Best Western: Tombstone
Best Sci-fi: Aliens or Matrix
Best Martial Arts: Hero
Best Car/Gun Porn: Ronin
Best Commies Invade And Are Pwned By Teenagers: Red Dawn
And Don't Forget: The Crow, The Professional, the Rambo scene from UHF

Also, another distinction should be made about, are we granting the "Best Movie" title based on the entire movie, or the action only?

Arnold is the king of action.
--Don't forget the scene when he takes on like 20 cops in the Galleria and kicks all of their asses!
--The scene when he tells the army guy to stay downwind: Army guy: "Down wind--do you think I can smell them coming?" Arnold: "I did."
--The motel fight scene when the guy tells Arnold that he's a badass Green Beret and Arnold replies: "I eat Green Berets for breakfast and right now I'm hungry--very hungry!" (this scene also has the mandatory gratituitious large naked boobies cameo!)
--Hell, even Rae Dawn Chong had an awesome scene when she blows the bottom off of the paddywagon with the RPG!

The action alone in this movie makes up for the horribly cheesey acting.
If you have not seen it--you are missing out on Arnold's finest piece of work ever!

(a side note--watch the scene when he drops Sully off of the cliff--the yellow Porsche is damaged badly on the driver's side; yet, after Arnold turns the car around to drive away, the driver's side has been miraculously repaired!)
