Moderator Applications?

I am sick and tired of autospam.org.

Thats what it has really become. Im sure you would agree with me. I am very willing to clean it up and have been doing the best i can. I see this crap all the time. Infact I just reported a ton of spam posts.

I don't know if there is a Mod application, but if there is I would really want to sign up. Im here 24/7 and catch all the crap all the time. I would gladly be a mod, because frankly, deleting and banning people on site is easier than "reporting" and waiting. This site is in need of more and better mods. Let me know if there is anything i can do.

The spam issue here is not really that bad. Simply ignore/report the posts and go on with your day. It doesn't do anyone any good to get worked up about it.

Wrong.... Access AdminCP, search for username, add the email adress domain he regged with to the ban filter, delete acount. And so forth untill those bastards are running out of email domains to reg with. Just deleting accounts wont do anything because these pricks have scripts running that do all the regging for them. Banning email domains will make it harder for them to get back on the forum, and if they do, ban their newly acuired domain.

First step is to get rid of all the bots already regged. Try looking for users that have posted less than 5 posts or even more, since they had some time here to spam their filth. After deleting and banning all those accounts, you should look regulary for new users that signed up. (check for users that have less than 2 posts and accounts made recently) Check the email adresses they regged with... If it is something like @bestwayhealth.com you should be on your toes, anything out of the ordinary should be red-flagged, deleted and the email domain added to the ban filter. Keep this strict policy up and i'll guarantee no more spam messages for a long while. The suckers that still reg get deleted and banned before they can authenticate their account. :D (i check on a dayly basis)

Do i ask for moderator rights? No. Don't want them either. Just helping out as a good AO-er would. :cheers:

New moderators have to realize they are new. I have seen other boards that were somewhat factioned where new moderators stepped in to "restore order". A new moderator needs to stick to slight post corrections, perhaps a few warnings here and there, and handling of spam. If a new moderator steps in with ban stick ready to go.... it does not generally go well.

The only real effective way to do this is to deactivate the automatic registration and go with Moderator confirmations and install a code recognition screen in the account activation process. You almost have to do both. The recognition screen can get a lot of the Robot generated ones. The Moderator approval can get a good deal of the rest with a clever modertator that looks carefull. Then they can be looked at before accepting them. Normaly if there is a delay the Robot will have moved on too. This takes considerable time for a Moderator to do and a Moderator willing to look fairly often at the accounts waiting authorizations and review and make a ruling. Leading to occasional mistakes. And taking considerable time. And one can then watch the new accounts for a bit and can do a complete purge and removal all in one swoop if they made a mistake. Not before five or six posts are made sometimes. But, in most cases can be done before almost anyone can notice them. I caught many of them that way and no one ever saw them. But its about the only real way to do it with this software and these clever robots.

I also did this one time way back for a particular poster that kept generating IP's and resigning up. But he turned around and became a fairly decent guy later on in the whole process. I have noticed a larger percentage of sites now using both recognition codes and moderated approval to counter the spam attacks. But nothing is perfect. Many of them lose members because the moderators are slow to activate. Thats the down side. But Spam attacks are becoming more numberous and troublesome everywhere on the net. Causeing a lot more Moderator time. But its not anything new. I do believe it has gotten a bit more previlent. However I can tell you that there are probably a lot more that existed but you never got to see them. Moderation is going on all the time behind the scenes that you never know about. And good moderation is indeed something you never notice. You should not assume its not happening just because of the few you actualy see that occur when moderators are busy doing thier real jobs. It does happen that they all get something going in thier lives and cannot be here every minute. No matter how many you have. Deal with it. It's not costing you anything. Ignore it and someone will come along shortly and sort it out.

Err.. i said i don't want the job? I simply cannot dedicate much time to this task during weekdays. I have a fulltime job and i am looking for other employment at the moment. If i get the job i will have to traven 1.5hrs a day longer, so that will put a dent in the spare time i have. Also i'm still kinda new around here, so i feel that i am not the right person for the job.

Now regarding this thread, I do think the present MODS are doing a decent job, but could jump on the spam issue a little faster. The MODS we have now have common sense, understanding, and a decent sense of humor (Which definitely helps my issue)

Now regarding this thread, I do think the present MODS are doing a decent job, but could jump on the spam issue a little faster. The MODS we have now have common sense, understanding, and a decent sense of humor (Which definitely helps my issue)

That is one of the most condesending things ever posted on this forum. Who gives a rats tail that he wasnt here "before AGD bought" the site. Who is anymore? Most of the old timers have either gone onto other things or do not post much/at-all anymore.

Maybe the crietria should reflect more of what a memeber has contributed in the last 6-12 months. Hell, I say anyone who doesnt have a certain number of posts in that time should either be moved to an inactive list or have their memberships deleted. Then everyone who "Remembers the ORIGINAL AO before AGD bought them" can go some place else and ***** about how bad it is now in peace.
