I am not trying to come off sterotypical/racist/whatever. I just notice that although I live in an area with a very mixed racial population, I rarely see black folks playing paintball.

What is it that doesn't appeal?

Can't help ya there. Whenever I'm at the field for walk on days I usually see a good mix of colors/ ages/ experiences, whatever. Can't see any reason why color/ nationality would matter either. (beside the whole ridiculous Muslim terrorist attack training that you hear about)

around where i am ive seen plenty of mixed races/nationalities playing, i met a team from the Philippines a while back

edit; on saturday i played with a big black guy, he was really nice, and had the best reaction ive ever seen to my mag. went something like

"DAYYYYYUUMMM what is that thing, can i hold it? i havent seen one for like 10 years!"

Some of these guys are thought to be some of the best players in town. 'Course, others think they the most arrogant players around, and a few like them even less. But they know how to play, and they've been playing for a long time. When I first met these guys, back in the days when I thought a VM-68 was still new and trick, these guys all had matching Belsales Autocockers.

Now, of course, they all have Predator Angels I built for 'em. :D

when i worked at a field there were not many minorites that were regulars and pretty much all of them that were regualrs happened to be asian. the area i live in is very mixed but many of the minorities are on the lower side of incomes.

other than the militarty guys that came now and then pretty much all the minorities were rental palyers.

maybe it was that the field was on a militart base, maybe becasue the majorirty of better of minorities dont live as close to that field as to others in the area. i relaly dont know, but i do see many less minorities than the areas population... maybe its casue all the black guys are better atheletes than us scrawny white boys so they are playing all the other sports while we are playing paintball :p .

then again my quazi boss was half black and just one crazy mofo (cool but dang was he crazy, and it wasnt the black half it was the stoner half :rolleyes: )

In years of playing, I actually know of two current regular players at the few fields I frequent. I have seen private groups out playing, and the occasional rental player.

It just seems to me that some actitvites appeal to certain ethnic groups and some don't.

As far as the whole economic remark the guy above me metnioned, I don't think it's true. The majority of people around my area that play work at minimum wage jobs and spend more on paintball than on living. Don't ask me how it works...

In my case most of the local greenhouse workers spend as little as possible as they return to jamaica after 18 months quite wealthy men. I've been told that working 6 months here and returning home that the guy could easy buy a house. Locally it's a matter of priorities I'd think

There are guys from China that come to the field alot who work similar jobs, how ever none plan to return to China.

Maybe it's because there are relatively few "african americans" where I am and more Jamaicans

I have only ever been privy to seeing 2x black players ever playing paintball, but that is more than I've ever seen swim. In swim qual I learned many black men don't swim well, they just sink! Many times a rock has a better chance of staying afloat... :p

EVERYONE notices difference. It is in our genetics, its natural. To say that you are racist just because you have powers of observation and know how to thoughtfully process them does not consitute racism....although a lot of people now days would like to believe so.

My intrest is that there are a large untapped group of people who don't play. I was curious as to what is the turn off....how can we gain more intrest from that segment?

Hi, We only have a couple black players in my area, both can & will hand you your head then shake your hand after. Having a few black friends where I live I asked a couple about playing. One had & said that he didnt like the pain, the other didnt get why most of us play. He said he looked at it as a crazy /redneck whiteboy thing. I lived in SOCAL until I was 12 & when I talk to my buddies from back then several have played but stated it just wasnt for them (we were the token white family in a hispanic/black area).
I believe its more of a culture & money thing.

Have you been to Jamaica? Buying a house there can mean anything from a seaside mansion to two pieces of wood waiting for cinderblocks to hold them up...

It is legitimate to inquire about the racial/religious/sexual makeup of participants in the industry.

The question could have been asked more delicately, such as "why do I see so few racial minorities playing"? This way of asking the question encompasses race, but is less potentially provocative,as it refers to 'race' as a phenomona, rather than singling out a particular minority.

It is inappropriate to make untrue, seemingly bigoted remarks such as 'whites are wealthier' as this is sterotyping of the worst kind and deliberately invites outrage and upset.

By analogy, its like these statements: 'why is there an apparent difference in educational success that seems to run along racial lines' versus 'all asian kids do really well in school because their parents beat them if they don't bring home straight As'. One asks a question based on presumably factual information, the other makes racially charged assumptions.

There are any number of reasons why there might seem to be fewer people of a particular racial type participating in paintball:

1. 'whites' are a majority in the country. this of course includes many 'non-whites' who appear to be white. naturally, you will see more 'whites' playing than non-whites

2. geography. there are numerous areas around the country that have far less racial diversity than others. If you live in a 'white bread enclave', its unlikely you'll ever see a non-white playing locally

3. economics. the general history of racial minorities in this country is to enter as unskilled labor and, after several generations of struggle, to have a spread of economic diversity like everyone else here who already went through the process. Some have been more successful than others at this.

4. local economics. A large percentage of playing fields are naturally located in rural areas; it is not atypical for the populations of rural areas in this country to have a large population of low-income minority residents.

5. cultural. here's a good one: why don't you see more Hasidic Jews playing paintball? If you want to be sterotypical, they're Jews, right? They can certainly afford to play...well, it turns out paintballs are non-kosher, so whether most of them actually control the banks and the media or not hardly matters. Even if they do, they still won't be playing. There are all kinds of cultural norms that may contribute to a bias against playing paintball.

6. cultural perception. it may also be that paintball is perceived by various minorities as being a 'white person's game' (gee, wonder where that concept might come from?) and most folks don't want to go where they think they won't be welcome.

There are many other reasons as well.

Here in the Inland Empire and even Downtown LA, I see many more hispanics and asians, than I do africans. Even though there is a large community here of them. The ones I have witnessed playing were usually rentals and were in groups of 5+ at a minimum. They all tried to do the gangster thing and were horrible at following basic safety rules, and rarely if ever saw any of them again. The hispanics and asians both from 2 different economic status's doesn't hold to the economics of why someone does or does not play. Seems to be more of a cultural obstacle than anything else.

The few africans who do play regularly, do not seem to follow the stereotype of thier race. Not going to go into this furthur as most people from any ethnic background has too thin of skin and cannot let the past be the past.

Black people arnt into paintball for the same reason whites arnt into basketball. Its whatever the person wants to do, which is gretaly influenced by what thier culture says.

We all know that there are whites in the NBA and blacks playing paintball, its just an example.

At my field, there is usually a group of black players every weekend. Most often they are renters, but there are regulars.
