View Full Version : First time I played pump speedball

And I love it!

I can't explain how much I love this. I'm definately hooked.

I started the day in kinda a rut. I show up at 9, pay entry(brought my paint), and my first fill, and hand the guy my little 3.5 oz tank. He takes it and says, "you know, there's still some in there, you can go play before you come back and get it filled." But I wanted to start the day with a fresh tank, I didn't know how much was left in the old one, so I have him fill it. He sets up his co2 station and hooks up my tank. He's fiddling with it for awhile, and after about 5 minutes, he comes back to me and says, "Well, it looks like your pin is bent." At this point, I'm like... you're kidding right? How the heck am I supposed to play if he's just destroyed my tank? I stayed cool though, and point out to him that it was holding air before I handed it to him. So he takes it into the back, and fiddles with it for awhile, and comes back to me 5-10 minutes later, pokes the pin, and the pin falls out. Now I'm like... wtf? Then he says something like, "It's really not my responsibility for this... I called my supplier, they don't carry these... go back to where you bought it and see what they'll do for you"

I decided not to get pissed yet, so drove a half hour round trip to the store and back. They replaced it, free of charge. Excellent store. I was hoping they would, but really wasn't expecting anything. The store is Devil Mountain Sports on pacheco blvd in concord, CA. They've also got a website, www.dmspaintball.com .

So I get back, and the guy says he'll comp my air, because of the trouble, so I'm like, okay. Finally, an hour and a half into the day, I start playing. At first, I just got used to playing pump, not being able to hold people down with a burst or short string of paint at their bunker. I didn't realize how much I actually relied on that until I lost the ability to. The first couple games were really a learning experience for me, that my old techniques wouldn't work anymore. Then I ended up playing a short one on one with a guy who played tourney ball up in oregon(he'd borrowed a vl orion, so I wasn't seriously outgunned), and he pretty much tried to bunker me within the first 15 seconds of the game. At that point, I realized that one shot really is all you need. He shot about 3 at me, every one missed. I shot one at him, got his leg. Whee!

Jam:1
Lose: 1

Then I had a relatively good day, and noticed that I was still able to shoot people. I had to play a lot more agressively off the break, and alot more defensively after that, but I wasn't horribly outgunned and mauled.

My crowning moment was a 5 on 5 game where I took the 40 right laydown off the break, and snapped out the back right aztek, bumped up to the 50 right dorito, and was snapping with their center back. He drew back and started shooting out the other side, and what do I do? RUN THROUGH! I must have been on crazy pills... a run through with a pump? I got a lucky shot to the back of a guy on the left(I saw it break on him, and he walked off), at about their 20, and at the same time, someone else shot out the back center guy I was going for. Then I notice that they've still got a guy in the snake, and I'm back in their base, and he doesn't know I'm there... I got within about 3 feet of him and yell surrender to end the game.

So I'm pumped.

Who else loves pump?

Ah yes. I never really appreciated the feeling of gogging someone until now. Every hit is so much more enjoyable. It feels like I worked for it, instead of getting one of the many balls to make a lucky hit.

I played stock pump yesterday in advanced speedball indoors and i took the back right bunker and held that down going 1 v 1 most of the game against a psp ego funny cause he didnt think it was a pump

I played speedball pump before and had a very similar day...except I didn't shoot anyone :(. It was still fun though. I used like 200 balls and actually had an excuse for not shooting anyone the whole day.

I like pump alright, but it can be overwhelming being the only pump player on the field. Sounds like you had a blast though

What gun were you using? I love Snipers and Sheridans. Great looking, feeling, and shooting guns.

A little trick I learned. It only works if your gun doesn't have an anti-double cocking mechanism. Say you're 15 feet or so away from the snake or some similar laydown. Double cock your gun and fire over where the person is probably at. The first ball will shoot at almost regular velocity; but the second will lop nicely over the bunker. It may take many tries until you get the person out, but it's so worth it. Imagine the look on the persons face when you eliminated them WHILE they were completely under cover!

Pump rocks!

very nice. i'll have to try that. the only other time ive tried double cocking is when bunkering.

make sure when you double cock that you keep your gun some what elevated or else the second ball will distance itself from the first ball and then when you shoot they will bust in your barrel.

Your on trigger happy? (ubersweetawesomenesstothemax) you must know Davinci. :D

I also am big on pump play. After I aquired a beautiful SS25, I have loved it ever since. Pump is a GREAT way to train. Not only does it save you money, but it forces you to use skill/technique over ROF. Pump takes mucho skill, and mucho balls. Also, as a pump player, you get respect from refs/players if you throw an awesome move. For example, my greatest paintball move ever was with my pump gun. I booked it to the snake, and reached the 50. Then I snapshot at a guy in the center back aztec (no elim.) and then I shimmied to the end of the snake where there was a guy w/ a tippy (I later figured out) on the other side of the bunker. I snapshot him in the earpice, which I felt bad about, but paintball is paintball. Then I got up, pumped an ran to the back can, taking out that guy in the back center aztec from before, then I shot out the guy in the other back can on the same side of the field as I was. Then I got bunkered. Even though it was a 2 on 4 odds, I still managed to pull off a huge move. and for those who don't belive me ask Where am i? or the ref w/ the white I3's or the ref w/ the camo JT flex 8 goggles at BPS. (I don't know the ref's names, and Where am i? was my other teammate). But basically pump is sick, and if you make some sweet moves, then you gain respect.

I haven't played a game in over a year, and the last time I truely enjoyed the game was while I had my pump, a sterling. I just wish there were some fields around here where I could enjoy a good game.

Pump is awesome. great way to play a full day of paintball for $20.

Personally I love going Stock class with a dropout phantom. 12 grams are great. I was changing a 12ie once and looked at the ref over my shoulder who was watching me reload like he'd never seen a pump gun - much less a 12 gram changeout. His expression was like, "WTF  "

It's awesome to be able to rifle trough 1700 balls in 2 hours with an e-gun, then spend the rest of the day using a pump. Or if your budget balling with another pumper, split a 25 pack of 12grams and a bag of 500.

...Or $10... :D

I got a free air fill from Dan, had som left over paint, and only had to pay field fee! Shoot, it's almost like everytime I play at Splat, I never spend more than $20. I somehow always have left over paint, and if I play semi, it's $10 for all day air.

I love that place. :p

I get a 12 pack of 12 grams for like $7 and a bag of paint for $10.
So $27 for a day of play and a chance to lob an expended cartridge at the other team is a great deal for me.

i have played with my PGP for 6 months. exclusively ... i have played mostly speedball... i have made a few moves that i won't forget too ... if i had made them with a semi ... eh not so impressive ... but the fact i did it with pump in hand ...

i played yesterday and it was a mediocre day ... I made one move and ended up tagging 2 people out but other than that ... nothing special ...

except everytime someone went to shoot it they just couldn't seem to grasp the tilt back/pump/shoot ... 3 of the 3 people i had to pump it for them so they could shoot it ... yet noone took me up on the "you can use it for a game" offer ...

When my pump club plays on a speedball field against all semi teams the games are just as fast .... and we usually win the first 3 or 4 games .... then they want to mix the teams up.

For the last month I've been playing for $5 a day ($5 entry for a college ID discount + use paint from before). A total of $10 if you count the garbage plate afterwards :ninja: .

But yes, I totally agree. Pump speedball is wicked fun. Nobody else up here pumps, at least none that I've seen. I love all of the wierd looks and snickers I get when I walk onto the field with a pump with all of the "advanced players". There's nothing like one balling an "agg" kiddie in the goggles, or bunkering one (or two...its happened) in the snake and hearing them mutter all frustrated "I can't believe I got shot by a <insert explative> pump". It never gets old :D.

LOL ... there was one time I ran the entire tape on the right side of the feild ... they were all looking the other direction or looking down or who knows what ... All I know is the the horn blew ... I ran my butt off. Bunkered their back corner guy, one shot the other back corner guy, then one balled the rest of their team from behind.

They were all like: "Where'd he come from??" and "Can we play another game that lasts longer please??"

I think that game lasted 15 seconds .... So yeah ... one balling/bunkering/gogging, and out manuevering everyone is the best.

Don't take this as a "funbash"...because if you like pump play and it can allow you to play more often, more power to ya.

But, let me take the other side for a moment.

My worst day of paintball play ever that was not the result of malfunctioning equipment ( :cuss: ), was last summer.

It was outlaw play and I planned on playing all day with only 1000 rounds so I thought I'd play pump to conserve paint.

In the first game, I took up a nice position in a little ditch and waited for the enemy to happen upon me. Well, along comes an opposing player walking up behind me and he had no idea I was there...so I turn and fire!! Nothing happens...forgot to pump a ball into the chamber :tard: So he lights me up.

In the second game, I decide to take the high ground and maybe pick off some opposing players as they attack my team below. Well, two of their players also walk up the ridge (high ground) and stop. One of them thinks he sees me and drops down. The other guy doesn't see me and continues walking towards me looking around. I fire 3 rounds at him in succession and he drops. Shortly thereafter, I receive about 50-60 rounds in my direction, with about 6 of them hitting my torso and another 21 hitting my leg. So I'm out.

3rd game...I hunker down in some tall grass...see a couple opposing players walking my direction...I wait until they are within 25 feet...start to fire!! As they are getting fired at, they start returning fire in retreat...they hit me about 6 times as I fire my 4th ball.

So now I'm mad. Three games, 3 deaths, no kills. Of matter of fact, I'd only fired less than 12 shots. So now I make sure that if I'm going to fire...I'm going to be sure to hit them...because once my position is given away, I'm dead in the water. So I spend game 4 crawling around in brush...only moving when a car or motorcycle would drive by so not to make too much noise. I get all the way behind the enemy position...start to move up on them...then they charge!! Away from me. My team kills the last of them as I come crawling out from a mixture of brush and barbed wire.

And to end the day on a great note...in the final game, I got lost and wandered the woods for an hour and a half trying to find my way back to the place we were playing at. When I got back, the other team was still looking for me...and proceeded to shoot me as I waved to them (to let them know that I was allright).

Yeah, pump play is awesome. I spent all day trying not to give away my position because as soon as I do I get shelled by overwhelming firepower. I got like zero kills...and had no fun. As a plus, I used less than 15 rounds. Whoopdee Doo! I could sit home and watch TV and throw 15 rounds in the toilet and have more fun. Don't get me wrong...I hate the progression of the game to ROF and electros...but the simple fact is that as long as that's the way it is, pumps will be nothing more than a novelty to players without the finances to buy boatloads of paint.

Just my opinion.

LOL .... Oh man ... Yeah I'll admit when I started I had days like that. I think the problem you had was that you were trying to hard to shoot a lot of paint at your targets ...

Use the force!!!! Guide that first ball to your target and then they'll waste time looking for you cause it's almost impossible to find someone when you're well hidden. You should be able to pick one or two off before the rest of them come your way.

And even then in the past, the rest of the unit usually uses to much caution for their own good cause they think you're a semi who's holding back on fire. There have been numerious times where I've held of 5 to 10 guys with a pump.

The Art of War : Appear Strong when weak ... Appear Weak when Strong.

And you have to laugh when you hold these guys up and might even take a few out when they realize you have a pump ... I laugh so hard when I hear "He's got a pump, RUSH HIM!!!"

The same thing is happening to me. I can't get any eliminations. The reason I am sticking to pump play is that in the long run I will be a better player. Also, I didn't spend $400 on my awesome Phantom set-up not to use it. :shooting:

CO2 + X-valve= :(

eh not like i would have been shooting 20BPS with the stick feed on there ...

but i think that was a mock up photo ... i actually used a minimag valve with the stick feed ...

In fact i only used the x valve once ... i got it about the time i decided to play with limited paint so i sold it to pay bills ... don't get me wrong ... cool valve I just didn't need it ..

Ouch, I'm sorry you had a rough day. I've played pump three times now, and loved it every time, even including the first time(woodsball) where I tripped and tore up my hands. For speedball, I dunno. I haven't really noticed a lack of ability to do anything except keeping people's heads down to move. Instead, I need to wait until they're not concentrating on me, then move up until I've got a shot on them. Sometimes I can do it, sometimes I can't. Snapping isn't really all that much harder. I've got to "snap" more, instead of posting, but It's doable.

It's definately a handicap, but since I play exclusively "rec" paintball, I kinda needed another challenge.

And to address your day one more time. I notice I get shot out quite a bit more when I play pump, but it doesn't get me down. There's always the "excuse" that I'm using a pump, and so at a natural disadvantage. I really don't measure the success of a day's play on the number of people I shoot, but on how much quality play I get. For instance, your fourth game would make a terrific story, I would have fun with that. Playing woodsball with a pump is hard. I only had one game where I shot someone, the rest of them I either got shot out, or never hit anyone, but it was still fun going out there and trying to get them.

I'd say the #1 reason I like pump is that it lets me play every weekend now, instead of every 2-3 weeks like before. The #2 reason is because it gives me a new challenge, and I don't feel bad about playing less experienced players. They've got firepower, I've got more experience, it kinda balances out. I worry less about who I play, and more about how I play. #3 might be because it's cool getting the recognition of being the only pumper on the field and still holding your own, I'm not sure, but that's definately a good feeling.

I love playing pump.
I have been playing with my PGP for 6 months straight now and I have took it to games such as walk-ons, Invasion of Normandy and Air Assault open play.
I pay 10 bucks for entry to Air Assault, and I bought a pod of paint off of some guy for 5 bucks and that lasted me 2 times and I still have a few leftovers.

Aslan, it sounds like you just had a bad day, if you ever get around to trying it again I have a feeling you might like it.

Earlier that year I was playing in this abandoned building and ran out of HPA so I had to switch from my Mag to my Spyder. But the Spyder had a little leak around the macroline so I said "sc#ew it" and grabbed the Trracer. This building had two levels and I looked up through a hole in the floor and saw the head of a player I knew was on the other team.

I fired one shot and it hit the edge of the hole in the floor. I fired the second shot, it pegged him right in the melon. Awesome shot. What made it better was he started yelling at his team for shooting him because he had no idea where it came from.

Now, here's where the story takes a turn. These guys played this rule where you have to get hit 3 times before you're dead. For a pump player, this is a nightmare. Well, I lined up...took another shot through the hole in the floor...pow...hit him right in the facemask! :wow: It was awesome! Except noe, he figured out it wasn't his team and that I was shooting at him from below.

As I stand there trying to see where he went to...he fired about 15 rounds through the hole lighting me up. Stupid 3 kill rule! I would have felt like a God if I had eliminated that blow hard with his "Mega A-5" using my little Trracer. Instead, all I got was a funny story and some nice size welts on my chest.

I'll probably play pump again...just not until I'm running low on paint and desperate to play.

I got to play with my phantom for the first time this weekend. It was awesome although I would definatily get the ring kit for the barrel. Had a few roll out on me. I owned a kit with and ego though.

That's terrible advice. When you rock forward to load a ball you're going to get the inevitable rollout. Even with a hopper you'll get rollouts if you don't keep your barrel slightly elevated. Detent rings are the best $5 you can spend on a phantom.
