People on AO have done that very same thing, and other people have defended their actions.

Truly sad.

That's BS.

Because half of it is probably going to be used in court costs. And if she only awarded them 300$ to cover the phone what lesson would the sell of learned? At 5g's she might think twice about doing it agian.

you want to know why that dumb hoe went on the TV show? because the show pays the fines levied against the looser. Thats how "pay" you for your air time.

that 5g's isnt going to hurt cause it isnt coming out of her pocket.

The plaintiff was getting compensation for the degrading comments left on their feedback page too, that is why the award was so large. I agree $5000 is a lot, and if I'm not mistaken, the highest amount that can be awarded in that kind of court (thought I read that somewhere), maybe those scammers will learn a lesson........

Judge Judy is an arbitrator, not a judge. She does not work for any court of government agency. Her decisions only hold power because the involved parties signed an agreement giving her that power. People are willing to go on there and deal with hey crap because the producers of the show pay out for any judgment. Meaning the fat chick didn't pay a dime and got to keep her $400.

This is a perfect example of the way she conducts herself. She believes that she is the smartest person in the world (as she flat out stated in that video). I think she thinks that she really is a judge and has let her little bit of power go to her head. She disregards the law and just does what she believes to be right, a judge would never get away with pulling the stuff that.

Nope, I just assumed a real judge had some traces of civility.

Well, she was a judge:

From her site:

Having made a name for herself as a tough but fair judge in New York's Family Court, Judge Judith Sheindlin retired from the bench in 1996 and segued into television to host the syndicated series.

You would think so, but not always the case. She is/was a judge and i'm sure an attorney. An arbitrator is the same as a judge except they decide the judgment of the case, not a jury. Both parties agree to binding arbitration and their dispute is removed from the normal civil litigation docket. But even after arbitration, you can end up back in civil court.
