Yes and yes. I've done it and I really should have gotten an airsmith to do it for me. While it is very straight forward, it's always safer to let a professional fix high-pressure systems.

Was the tank standard thread or left hand?

That's a good question. I don't remember. The one I just took off my SCUBA tank has a standard thread so I'd think the paintball tanks would be the same.
