I've heard that steel tanks have to be hydroed every year, and I've heard they have to be hydroed every five years. Which is it? How often do you have to hydro a steel tank? And how often do you have to hydro a glass tank? Please answer.

Steel tanks over 2" in diameter must be hydro'd every 5 yrs
Steel tanks under 2" do not need to be re-hydro'd
Fiber wrapped tanks, any size must be hydro'd every 3 yrs, except tanks that fall under the DOT-E 10915 exemption, which must be rehydro'd every 5 yrs. (although if manufactured before IIRC 6/01, they must be re-tested at the 3yr mark and every 5yr after that)

Steel tanks are every 5 years and most glass tanks are 3 years except some glass tanks are 5 years. Large scuba tanks are every 5 years with a visual every year. I hope this helps.

3 years for Fiber tanks with DOT Exemption E11005 (Carleton)
5 years for Carleton and Luxfer tanks with DOT Exemption E11194 / E10915(http://www.carltech.com/new-composite/extension.html ; http://www.luxfercylinders.com/news_010521.html)
I can't find the exemption number for steel tanks right now, or I'd put that for sure too, but I'm pretty sure its 5 years.

You can look up your tank there.
