Another day of play at the OA Paintball field in Rosedale. Since I had just tuned my Y-Gripped RT Pro with its new Flatline-equipped tank, I decided to use it. The marker performed flawlessly all day. I was (again) using X-Ball Silver and the .690 insert for the Scepter was the best fit. Interestingly, another gent there was also using X-Ball Silver and his fit correctly with the .686 insert in his Scepter.

You know, I must have gone through a good 14,000 rounds of X-Ball Silver by now and I have yet to break a ball by chopping or down the barrel. It also breaks well when it hits and I get good accuracy. Good stuff.

I fired about 1000 paintballs over the course of 7 games. The most I used in a game was 400, the least zero (more on that in a bit). My chrono was good, with a dozen shots ranging from 273 to 283 fps.

I am going to refer to a couple of people by name today. I might misspell some, so I apologize to those players in advance.

The fields at Rosedale a thick woods, so I made sure to apply insect repellent and a heavy DEET-based repellent to my clothing. We had a very good mix of experienced players on the field, with a mix of good quality markers. Dave was out there with his Spyder (Dave, you need a revvy for that thing) and Lawrence was there with his Tac-One. It was good to see another AGD owner and Lawrence is a good player. He tends to shoot slow and steady, taking very few shots compared to me, but those shots are accurate. Something that happened a couple of times is that I would pin someone down with fire, then Lawrence would manuever to a good position and take them out with a few well-placed shots. I know that is what happened to James one game. I got him pinned down behind a bunker. He had one of my teammates pinned in the open, right in front of him (like 10 feet), but every time he tried to pop out I fired a burst and he couldn't pop out enough to get my teammate. Lawrence moved up and took out James.

My very first game was on the field with a big hill in the center. Myself and another player went up the center to the top of the hill. Alfonso from the other team had a shorter run (they start atop the hill) and was already in an opposing bunker with his Angel. He managed to nail me as I dashed into position. One ball snuck through the brush, hit a thin twig two feet in front of me, was cut perfectly in half, then one half hit me on the hand and front foregrip as I started to slide. Yes, the ball was broken, but that half hit me dead on and put a big splat on me. I called myself out and headed off the field.

I often torment Alfonso about his Angel and he kidded me after the game was over. I vowed to go after him. The rest of the day, I would try to locate him (I could recognize the sound of him shooting) and then go after him, even ignoring other players. He never got me again, but I took him out (I believe) four times. One of the best was on Field 1, which is very open. The only cover is big trees and bunkers. I dashed up, slid in behind a low bunker, and engaged three enemy (one was Alfonso, behind a big tree about 15 yards in front of me). After a minute or two, I charged, keeping myself in Alfonso's blind spot, jumping a log, and running through paintballs thrown out by the other two guys. Once I crossed the tree, I could see the Angel owner and shot him three or four times in the butt and back. He spun and my next shot hit him in the hand from about 8 yards. He dropped his Angel, the Halo went flying off, and paintballs went everywhere.

This game was one of those "good games" for me, so I am going to continue with it. I took cover behind that same tree where Alfonso had been, engaged another player who was wide open to me and eliminated him, then engaged one guy who started playing with me. He would shoot, but didn't try to get in a firefight with me. Mostly he would pop out his head and then immediately pull it back as paintballs whizzed through the same space, but he also stuck his foot out. After about two minutes, I charged again (by now I am well into enemy territory) and slid in behind a small bunker. When the guy popped out he realized I had moved and immediately called himself out when I started shooting and hit his shoulder (my new position had a clear shot at him). I started moving up, ready to take fire and immediately ran into another guy who unloaded on me. I turned my move into a slide, popped up and returned fire, then the other player tried to run away - moving across my line of sight. I unloaded right in front of him and, perfect storm, I think every ball hit the poor guy. He actually ducked into my barrage and took three or four hits to the head, maybe two or three to the body. That was the last enemy.

Once you take out somebody who is engaging you, move fast. You catch the other players, who were relying on their teammate to keep you busy, off their guard.

My goof was during another game on Field 1. Moving up, took out two players, then encountered Lamonte and his Ion really dug in behind a fallen tree. After trading a couple of volleys, I decided to flank him. I ran across, shooting to keep him down, dodging around a ref who was scrambling when my move surprised him, and suddenly stopped. I was past the yellow rope boundary on my left! I look right, the rope is also behind me. I had run through a break in the border where some four-wheeler riders had cut the rope. "Gosh darn it!" and I put my marker and free hand up in the air, because I am out. Just then Lamonte's volley of paintballs hits me in the chest and stomach. I call out, "I'm out! I'm sorry that I ran outside the tape! Please stop shooting me!" "Sorry!" comes the yelled reply.

I must say that I love using a good rapid fire from the marker when someone tries to hide behind a bush. One game the enemy player ran behind a bunch of tall weeds that was about the size of a compact car. Thinking that I could probably get him, I started twenty-round or so bursts. Burst fire, wait, burst fire, wait. Halfway through the hopper (probaby all of fifteen seconds) the ref started yelling that the other guy was hit. The same tactic, shooting a solid volley, works good against people hiding behind pallets with space more than 2" between the boards. Alfonso can attest to that. I think that two or three went through and hit him in the head the second game I played.

When I am rapid firing like that, I tend to shoot a burst, then check if the other guy is out. That way I am not overshooting them.

Shot count for this marker is now 21,000
