summer job pays off

Just thought I'd share, I took money from extra work this summer and got some stuff for my shop,a FLEET of mills, tool boxes, bench, the works.

Awesome! You got the mill! Where did you pick up those end mills from? Also Ive got almost that exact same craftsman toolbox too! LOL

About a week after I got my mill mounted permanently on the bench I tore it down, cleaned up the ways real good and then adjusted the gibs so it was nice and tight. Also the motor on top was EXTREMELY loose, so I went around and made sure everything was good and tight after that. :D

I got some at a hit and miss engine show, and some specialty ones from traver's tool company.



I got on a forum for small milling machines, got some tips, tore the whole thing up, lubed tightened and replaced a few things, ever brushes on the motor, so it's top notch now.


I still miss bridget, the '63 bridgeport I spent this summer running.

What forums were you on? And yes bridgeports are awesome they cut soo smoothly! Someday Ill get one, but Ive got a lot of other stuff that I "need" to buy first. :D

Oh BTW us Colorado people rock with our mini machine shops! We should partay! Speaking of which I put up a merry-go-round in the backyard for drunken shennanigans... If you ever wanna get piss drunk and hurl everywhere youre more than welcome to.

Eh I claimed it was for my daughter's B-day present, but we all know the real reason it's out there! :ninja:

I'll definately check out those forums... I always enjoy reading about mods and projects that other people are doing.

Oh and the manual I got with my milling machine certainly left a lot to be desired, but you can go onto Grizzly's website and download a PDF manual for their machine and it's got a lot more good info in it. Also they sell parts for them if you ever need anything. Just figured I'd share in case you didn't already know. :)

this one is very close to the grizzly one, only difference I see is this one is 4/5hp while theirs is 3/4hp.

At any rate, a sherline mill is on it's way to my house too!!!


D---, That went quick, summer job money is low, I spent three+ grand on toys and equipment when I got back. At least I'll get return on the mills...ULE anyone?haha

where'd you get that mini mill, and how much?

i'm sort of annoyed because my college charges $10/hour for personal use of the machine shop :( and since i'm going to college, i can't really afford/store anything of my own. i'm wondering how a full sized bridgeport mill would go over in the middle of my dorm room...

You could get one this size for about 400 bucks. but as you know for a full on shop with all the nessecary tools and such you need to set aside alot more. This came from a cummins tool show.

I have two mills of my own now, and with everything in my shop at home I have about 5k worth of tool.

Hey Papasmurf, what subforum on those forums do they talk about the import mini mills in? Most of the sub topics are for expensive tool room quality stuff! There's some sweet info on that site though. You said that you changed out your brushes for a higher quality set? Where'd you hear about that mod, and where'd ya get the brushes at?

I don't recall, it's been a while ago, I got my brushes from my neighbor, he rebuilds starter engines and alternators for a trucking company. It might be overkill, but I got mine for drilling holes, not milling paintball guns, although my rails have been loved on a little.



i don't think a mill in the dorm is a great idea, the bridgeport I used weighs 2200 pounds.

that's just what the website says though. the school is more research oriented, but they routinely give out master keys to undergrad students. there may be a way to get around the fee, depending on what i'm doing. plus with everything i'll be doing there won't be much time to rack up a machine shop bill, if i do have to pay for it :(

I was waitlisted at a school that offered full tuition scholarships to every student :(

...and didn't get off the waitlist. *sigh* i should have pulled up my grades a bit more and saved $160,000 or so.
