what do you think of this idea??? you can go to the web site at the end of the story to vote.. if you even care....
Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO — The fate of Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball is now in the public's hands after its buyer announced Monday he was taking votes on whether to give the ball to the Hall of Fame, brand it with an asterisk or blast it into space.

Fashion designer Marc Ecko revealed himself as Saturday's winning bidder in the online auction for the ball that Bonds hit last month to break Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs. The final selling price for No. 756 was $752,467, well above most predictions.

Ecko had not even taken possession of the ball before setting up a Web site that lets visitors vote on which of the three outcomes they think the ball most deserves. He said he plans to announce the final tally after voting ends Sept. 25.

"I bought this baseball to democratize the debate over what to do with it," Ecko wrote on the Web site. "The idea that some of the best athletes in the country are forced to decide between being competitive and staying natural is troubling."

The 35-year-old Ecko is known for his pop culture pranks, including an infamous Internet video that showed him apparently infiltrating an airport tarmac and spray-painting graffiti on Air Force One. The incident turned out to be a hoax.

But the auction house that handled the sale confirmed that Ecko is indeed the ball's buyer.

"This transaction is happening and is going to be done by the end of the day," David Kohler, president of SCP Auctions, said Monday.

Kohler called Ecko's decision "brilliant" and said he had already visited the Web site and voted to send the ball to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Matt Murphy, a 21-year-old student and construction supervisor from New York, emerged from a scrum with the ball on Aug. 7. He decided to sell it, he said, because he couldn't afford the tax bill that would result from holding onto the ball.

"This either makes him a lunatic or a genius, one of those two," Murphy said when told of Ecko's stunt. "I'm leaning toward genius."

Murphy said he planned to vote to send the ball to Cooperstown.

Ecko himself said he voted to brand the ball with an asterisk, a reference to the belief of some Bonds detractors that the Giants slugger's record is tainted by his alleged use of performance-enhancing substances. Bonds has denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Ecko said what really interests him is seeing what happens when an "American Idol" approach comes together with a serious public debate over drugs in sports.

"My vote really doesn't matter," said Ecko, who identifies himself as a New York Yankees fan. "The American public will tell us what to do with it."

Brand it. Bond's career should have that footnote.

"I used roids to break a record."

Congrats on not being able to break a record by yourself.

Until somebody has concrete, physical proof that Bonds actually used sterioids (ie a failed drug test) I have to vote to send it to Cooperstown minus the asterisk.

Agree 100%. Plus for all you mental giants out there that think roids will help you hit home runs Ill pay you to roid up and go give it a shot. Roids did not help him be able to hit a 99 mph fast ball or a whicked curve. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is the hardest thing to do in sports, and no amount of roid is going to change that. Now, if he did do roids, this may have helped him recover faster and maybe gave him a bit more bat speed but it in no way helps his hand eye coordination or his ability to "see" if the pitch was a slider/curve/sinker and so forth. Put the ball in the hall and shut up about it. The guy hit the homers, roids or not.

I don't think there's any debate that hitting a ball is extremely tough and that not everybody could go do it. I think everybody knows that Bonds is a good hitter with or without steroids. But I think the problem with the steroids is it turns long lazy fly balls into home runs. Which quite obviously changes things.

I actually have that real card. Topps, Barry Bonds Rookie Card. It's not worth much, but it's cool cause I've had it since I was a little kid. My grandparents gave me a bunch of packs when I was little that they had saved for a few years and it was in there.

I'd like to see it blasted into space :P

did it help placing the bat on the ball? no
did it help hit LONGER and HARDER balls? YES.

*

Sad thing is, he was a hall of famer even before all of that.

The man has never failed a drug test. Without proof of a failed test, sorry he is CLEAN. Now, LEAKED grand jury testimony aside, do I think he used roids, sure. Is a man innocent until proven guilty, yes.

When someone shows me the PROOF of a positive drug test that the man was on roids, then I say *, until then, nope.

LOL, neither did Mark McGuire or Jose Canseco but are you saying they never did them either?

The point is that there is no PROOF that the man used steroids. Pictures from one year to the next are not PROOF. The only two things that will give beyond the shadow of a doubt PROOF is a failed drug test (he has passed every one that has been administered and has not refused any tests that were requested of him) or an admission of guilt. Innocent until PROVEN guilty...Remember????

personally my take is this roids should be legal all over, its the persons choice to take them. if barry took em so be it, hes not the first baseball player to and wont be the last either, just like all other sports. its how the world works the best players find a way to get an edge, plus without propper training and diet roids are useless. so if they want to put in the work to make the roids work for them so be it. as far as drug testing goes most testosterone products are out of the body within a few hours making it almost impossible for a drug test to catch them, other roids are not, so i say if they are dumb enough to get caught then crucify them, other than that let em have their records without a blemish.

I am under the belief that without roids, Bonds would not have hit as many homers, nor would he have been able to hit so many them late in his career. The edge combined with the longevity that the roids at the very least helped provide should be noted IMHO :(

Why not give the ball back to Bonds, provided he take a lie detector and a drug test on the spot?
Could solve a lot of problems

The clumsily-titled Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT Act, or USAPA) introduced a plethora of legislative changes which significantly increased the surveillance and investigative powers of law enforcement agencies in the United States. The Act did not, however, provide for the system of checks and balances that traditionally safeguards civil liberties in the face of such legislation.
