We went to the Georgia DOT training grounds for some driver training and tire testing on Saturday. Here is some helmet cam footage.

That thing sounded like a Mini Testarosa

And, looks like it would be a kick in the pants to drive.

Then we stood around it for a while after the chain broke. We have a ways to go.

Its the car we built last year for the formula sae student competition in Detroit. Main points of interest are paddle shifters, push button clutch, and its currently our test bed for a traction control system. Other than that its pretty straightforward; its a tube frame chassis powered by a honda f4i with a 20 mm restrictor.

More pics/info can be found here (http://www.me.gatech.edu/gtmotorsports/media.php). You can scroll down for links to more albums. Also the vehicle tab on top has info about previous cars. Pics from last year's comp are here (http://www.me.gatech.edu/ken.cunefare/FSAE07/). The car looks a good bit better with its bodywork on.

MoeMag, do you guys compete at winterbaja? Our baja team gave a presentation and that looked like a lot of fun. I know how it goes with breaking chains though, last May in Detroit we broke 2 or 3 chains during the first day of driving events alone. We probably wouldn't have been able to compete at all had someone not given us a bigger sprocket.

Winter baja? apparently not lol. Info?

As far as the chain it’s a design issue from last year’s car. This past weekend was the first time all of us as a group got out and just played with the cars since last year. We drove the stuff out of them to figure out what would break. So currently both of them are in the shop broken and I'm not really looking forward to seeing the faculty advisor today. As I am the first officer that will see him today that was there.

I think it might be the comp in Quebec...but the sae website says its in June, so I don't think thatd be right. Maybe a school just hosted a mock comp? Idk, I just saw pics of it in their presentation, and thought they called it winter baja.

Yeah, our chain thing was pretty similar. Someone didn't look into the torque that would be produced if the rear sprocket was as small as it was, and we just broke chains until UNC charlotte (I think) gave us a sprocket that would allow us to have a shorter final drive ratio.

Lol, your faculty advisor will get upset for you shaking down a car? Ours first rule is 'finish the car early', and noone is more vocal about that than our FA. I mean, everyone would rather see things break here than at comp.
