View Full Version : Not a Dye, Not an X-mag, maybe a PBN-mag?

So I bought this on ebay, with only this picture and a thin description of "X-mag", "easy on paint", "pewter" and "works fine". From the pick you can see the velocity adjuster of an RT or X type valve, so I figured the parts were worth it. I was actually looking for a ULT at the time. I'm always asking to see what kind of "goodies" people end up with, so I figured I would share.

The barrel turned out to be a J&J edge .691 back with some torn chrome spots and a few bore pits (after I cleaned the paint out).

What I thought was Dow 55 caked on the bolt was just gray fill from some paint. It was between the body and rail and between the rail and frame. It had been chopping pretty badly.

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/?action=view&current=S5000367.jpg" ><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/S5000367.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450"></a>

But I did get lucky, it has an X-valve with Level 10 (not always a given) and a ULT...

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/?action=view&current=S5000364.jpg" ><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/S5000364.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450"></a>

That is not all paint on the bolt spring. It's paint and corrosion. It was pretty beat down anyway; it went into the trash. Most of the orings are fair looking, but the power tube oring was hard and the carrier was way too tight. When I pulled it out, there were two shims on top of the carrier and one shim under the carrier, on top of the backing washer. :tard: The reg piston was major sticky too.

As I cleaned it up looking at the various tool marks on the air fittings, the body, rail and frame were all pretty smooth. Then I noticed the rail was unusually light colored, but that happens some time. Then I noticed the "pewter" body is not the funny blue color at all...

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/?action=view&current=S5000362.jpg" ><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/S5000362.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450"></a>

Then I notice the home drill and zinc plated screws holding the grip on...

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/?action=view&current=S5000368.jpg" ><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/S5000368.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450"></a>

So, I'm thinking the body and rail have been baked by some PBNer up the road. Here's my pewter pneu mag against it...

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/?action=view&current=S5000369.jpg" ><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff138/Spider-TW/S5000369.jpg" border="0" width="600" height="450"></a>

You can see the body is kind of brown, which is what blue anno usually turns to when baked. The rail may be factory light, but black usually turns blue gray when baked from the pictures I've seen.

Anyway, zinc screws are gone (they had started corroding), Level 10 is back in order, and I have a whole marker to try my ULT out on. I might just swap the real pewter body on there to match the rail, now that I see them together. :p

Very nice grab for the price

I wouldn't be surprised if it was baked by judging from the rail and body colours.

Nice to see that it went to someone that can actualy take care of it.

Well at least you know what your doing. The person you got it from prolly had no idea and they prolly got it from the persom who actually baked it. The things people will do because other people are doing it.... :tard:

Yeah, it was a real good deal for me, but only because someone else didn't appreciate their mag. :(

I can probably live with the color of the body, but the rail is too big and smooth to leave confederate gray.

X-mag haha, more like X valve in a hodge-podge of parts. i have no problem trying to sell stuff on PBN, but i refuse to buy there for the reasons you just ran into. my biggest irritations when it comes to B/S/Ting are

1. people that misrepresent what they're selling, intentionally or just because they're too damn lazy to get accurate info on the item

2. people that abuse or jack their stuff up and try to pawn it off... especially bakers, hacksaw jobs, and stuff that's never been cleaned or cared for

3. people selling dirty stuff. for crying out loud, take a minute and clean your crap up.

like some of the others said, at least it's finally in good hands now.
