View Full Version : Slow recharge, low pressure on older WPG reg

I picked up a 70/4500 WPG tank on here a while ago, and this weekend is the first time I will get a chance to play with it.

I hydro'd it and had it filled. When I screw it on, the gauge on my ASA shows that it is outputting about 650 psi. When I shoot my marker, an Automag Classic, the pressure drops to about 400 and it takes about half a second to come back up to 650.

The tank gauge started at 2000 psi. I also tried a full CO2 tank, and it registers 850 on the ASA gauge and recharges instantly (the needle just jiggles a bit) when I fire.

Seems like I have two problems. Not high enough pressure, and slow recharge. Are they related? Are the fixable? Can I the reg be rebuilt or should I just get a new one? The tip of the reg, above the o-ring, is a bit damaged but that doesn't seem to affect the reg sealing to the ASA. Or is it preventing the pin from being depressed far enough?

Please advise. I would hate to spend money on a new reg, I've just been having bad luck with tanks lately. :(

Some pins are just shorter than others. Compare the pin length against the CO2 bottle pin. Even if they are the same length, I would try it on a different ASA (especially an old screw type on/off ASA) to see if a little more pin depression doesn't help.

The top lip of the bottle is just to retain the oring and is not a sealing surface (normally  ). You can clean it up with a file and sandpaper if it seems to be hitting the ASA. If it has a big burr on the top, that could be the last bit you need to get it opened up.

650 psi is getting low for a mag, but it should recharge a lot faster anyway.

Hey thanks for the suggestions.

I checked the pins and the pin on the WPG looks about the same as the CO2 tank.

I tried 2 other ASA's, and the same thing happens, slow recharge.

The tank is showing just under 1000 psi by now, but I would think you wouldn't need such a big pressure differential to get decent recharge? i.e. the fact that it is less than 1000 psi in the tank now should not cause the slow recharge right?

Yeah, 1000 to 650 should be a pretty quick recharge. If you trust the tank gauge, the reg may need a rebuild. Idk about wgp reg rebuilds. Was the tank filled with a separate fill gauge, or have you shot that much out of the tank to know it was full? Gauges can be squirrelly as well.

Well even say 650 to 650 shouldn't take half a second or longer right?

I will take it and fill it, and have them cross-check the gauges tomorrow.
