View Full Version : How Many Players have a Small Air Compressor = 100PSI??

AGD
11-26-2009, 03:36 PM
All,

I now have the prototype mini-compressor working and on the first run it hit 4500 psi :)

Don't ask me how long it takes to fill a tank because I have not hooked one up yet. I am just filling a small fitting with a gauge on it.

Now that I can evaluate the system, some other things are coming to mind. It MAY be possible to make a single stage mini-pump that you feed with a typical shop 100 psi compressor. This would eliminate the first two stages and obviously save a ton of money.

The trick is you need to have a shop compressor so my question is, how many of you have one??

Thanks,

AGD

Any idea on the percentage this would cut costs?

Here is amanual booster you can run off of a 100psi compressor, you need 500psi input though. http://shop.vendio.com/supplyndemand/item/719154135/?s=1220783660 It's about $350. Probably not as nice or efficient as what TK will produce.

It would be interesting to post the costs Tom:
Price of a full system vs price of a partial system.

On my side I dont own anything and would probably find it easier to buy a ready-set item.

I have the ability to get access to one, but not everyday anytime of the day. Possibly make two different versions? The biggest thing would be the price difference between the two, if you could buy the one stage and a compressor for cheaper than the 3 stage then theres not gunna be too much of a market for the 3 stage (except for people who don't have the space for a compressor or noise constraints.

EDIT: Removed unrelated question.

Looper
11-26-2009, 07:48 PM
I have a shop compressor, but I could probably afford the complete unit just to keep it in one package.

Questions:
Will the addition of a shop compressor extend the life of the Mini-HPA-Compressor?

What duty cycles are we looking at, would we need to run the shop compressor 100% or the time?

What would be the optimal size storage tank on the shop compressor to reduce duty cycles.

BTW, awesome work and thanks for just being around.

Stayhuge

I think that there are a few issues to work out. By using two separate units, it might be less wear and tear. If Tom can focus on just the final stage, the unit might fill faster and work better. I think that most people are in agreement that if they have a compressor, this is better for them, and if they don't, then as long as the cost of a basic compressor AND the mini pump that Tom is making is about the same as getting an all in one package, they would buy it.

Personally, I think that having something that works off of a shop compressor is better. Now I have an excuse to by air tools

I don't have a real shop compressor. Nothing I would trust to run overnight.

AGD
11-26-2009, 10:52 PM
It would definitely knock 100 bucks off the price and I am absolutely considering several models.

Very basic = feed it with shop air, single stage, no timer or shut off but will be designed not to fill over 3k or 4.5k. The higher your input pressure the faster it fills but still at least over night.

Basic three stage= Plug, play and come back tomorrow. It does everything in one package.

Deluxe three stage = fill to 3k or 45.k. Auto shut off at pressure, filters for air and water, pressure gauges for monitoring etc.

I REALLY want to make one that is reasonable enough that you just have to have it. In a perfect world the lowest one would be less than 200 bucks but I am not sure of that yet so DON'T hold me to it.

AGD

PS we are talking quiet enough you could sleep with it in your bed.

11-27-2009, 12:42 AM
I do not have a compressor, though it might be useful to own one, but really hard to use because I live in an apartment building (far too noisy). So while the reduction in cost would be nice the noise of a compressor is not worth it, I'd just have to buy one of the three stage ones.

Duck Hunt
11-27-2009, 12:47 AM
I like this idea, and I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to own one if I had the money, but,

With many fields offering ALL DAY air, I would see a reason not to buy this. My home field, with a season pass, gives me air for free. A lot of people I play with have several tanks that they air up and the end of the day.

This item might be great for the winters if you don't live near an indoor field or if your local field closes, OR if you run outlaw ball mostly.

Now if it could fill in a lot less time, THAT would be better.

Just trying to help, love ya Tom!

i don't have one, and at least for my area not a good idea to run to high pressures as there is a bit of condensation in the air and it builds up inside even with a decent water filter. couldn't imagine what would happen with it pressurized to 4500. i know my friends 200 psi is rusty inside becuase of this.

Definitely interested either way, and I work in a store were I can easily fill my tanks. To be able to fill them at home though would be awesome, for one I wouldn't have to worry about taking my tanks to work with me, and two if I get a random hair to start tinkering because I can't sleep I don't have to worry about whether or not I have air. Also being able to fill 5 tanks for me and the kids before Sunday morning would be nice, since I normally have enough to do to set everything up for everyone to play.

This rocks Tom, and I am really happy to see your progress coming along so fast. I can't wait to see a working prototype !!

Hey Tom.

Probably best to offer 2 version. A basic which you would need your own air source and the deluxe. I would def throw down $400-600 for a deluxe one. If it's a little more, then I probably still consider it.

I have a couple of them. So I would really LOVE to be able to use it if it means reduced cost/smaller package. I only have the smaller ones, BUT depending on what time it takes you could get a small auto type one for a few dollars to use as long as you don't need it running too long to burn it up. That again is on the end user to work with it properly.

I don't have one, but I suppose I could get one. Now the question is, what kind do I need? I really don't know too much about the differences between air compressors. I mean, doing a quick google shopping search, I found one for $65 and one for $1,100. Now, would the one for $65 do the trick, or am I just going to burn through it and need another one after a month? If I need to purchase a $400+ compressor, then yeah, I'd go with the all in one package from Tom. Though, I should probably have a decent compressor anyway, so....

As others have stated:

If it still takes overnight to fill most home compressors (and most shops) make substantial noise. I think the only tolerable ones would be screw style compressors (I think) and I doubt anyone is going to put out the money for one of those.

ElPanda

it would be much more convienient if every person could use the product regardless if they have a compressor or not.

Id be tickled if the option existed to use both the pump straight up or to alternatively use another compressor as a booster, have both options. That way both sides are happy.

it would seem like a hassle purchasing two kind of expensive items, in stead of a moderately expensive single item.

and tom how are you handling the moisture problem? I assume you are building it with a moisture trap? That is the biggest problem I encountered on my 3600 psi manual pump, I could go for about 30 minutes and get up at around 3000 but if I looked down the line I could see water droplets everywhere.

Considering the usefulness of one, and the low cost these days I would think everyone would have one. How else do you air up the tires in your car (the gas stations around never never have working air)?

I think the idea of using this as the first stage is a great idea.

JKR
12-01-2009, 09:43 PM
I really can't see too many people willing to walk away from their shop compressors and leave it running for 24 hours or more. Besides the noise, the wear and tear and possible overheating issues might be a problem. I guess it depends somewhat on the amount of air required and how often the compressor would run to keep the tank filled.

Now a compact plug in unit that takes about the same amount of time and is quiet - easier sell especially for the younger crowd that have parents that might not like hearing a big beastly compressor running overnight.

AGD
12-01-2009, 10:04 PM
guys,

Thanks for the replies.

To quell everyone's fears. If you have a 30 gallon shop compressor tank, I figure the compressor will kick on three times in 24 hours if you go from 100 -80 psi before it starts back up. The cubic feet of air required to fill a 68 tank is small compared to the output of your shop compressor. A 68ci tank at 4500 psi holds about 12 cubic feet. If your typical shop compressor puts out 8 cubic feet a minute, it will have to run only a few minutes total over 24 hours to keep up.

The benefit of shop air is tripple the fill speed vs no air. This for the hundred dollar investment in a shop compressor is just unbeatable value. A friend of mine is making shop compressors out of brand new refrigerator compressors that are silent AND cheap. I will see how he is coming on those as a possible package deal.

I will be doing two models for sure. The first model will take shop air input OR NOT if you don't want too. It will just take several times longer to fill the tank if you don't feed it shop air. What I would do is turn on my noisy compressor, let it fill and then turn it off. I could come back many hours later and turn it on again etc.

The prototype is filling a tank right now. I will have an update soon.

People do seem to lack patience.
I didnt get one yet, I wanted to make sure all the bugs are worked out.
I dont want something I have to work on, I'm not mechanically inclined at all.
And its not a front burner must have item at least not for me, because the fields I play at have air. (read, 500 buys a lot of paint)
But I will end up with one sooner or later.

We are coming out with a new model probably in July that fills twice as fast and can top off a 68/4500 in a bit less than an hour.

Is the price point going to be the same? I'm really interested but having a hard time justifying the cost to my better half. I don't care about the fill time really, but I do like the idea of a faster model for sure.

I just finished a university stint to upgrade myself. It set back my paintball purchases. I was looking at getting one. I can hardly wait for the new model. I will eventually be getting one for my shop.

You haven't heard anything because PB players will not buy them because they have decided they are too slow...

:( When I stop bringing my 3 spare tanks to the field with me to fill with air before I go home I'll be picking up a shoebox. But sadly, until those tanks die, get stolen, or I get friends who aren't cheap slobs that I have to outfit I will be sans a shoebox.

Really isn't a bad deal for 550 (the new one) especially if your paying your local proshop to fill your tanks. You especially can justify some savings if you switch from CO2 to HPA and use this.
